Tomosynthesis is a type of mammography for screening breast cancer. This procedure uses relatively new technology, and it is only available in some hospitals.
Early results suggest that it may be a more accurate method of screening, especially if a radiologist combines it with conventional mammography.

Tomography is not new, but is over 50 years old. What is new is creating it (synthesis) through the use of digital 3-D imaging techniques to simulate (synthecize) the 'slices' that are created in tomographic radiography procedures, commonly used on various parts of the body. These days, MRI and CAT (Computter Assisted Tomography) may be more familiar to most people.
So, "Tomosynthesis" would appear to be a new application, and may be an attempt to counter the recent revelations that mammography isn't all that it is expected to be.....and never was all that effective for early diagnosis.
