Selling a US Plated Car to Someone Returning NOB
If I sell my US plated van to someone returning NOB and have the title and plates switched through South Dakota's service before they leave, is there a risk to the buyer (Temporal or Tourist) before they reach the border if the TIP is in my name?
I'm not interested in a refund of the TIP fee, nor in driving north myself. I know I can have the van destroyed, but it still has some good life left in it. Looking at all options.

Yea, there is a significant risk to you and the buyer. When I sold my California plated car I drove to the free zone at the border in Texas to sell it in the U.S. You are responsible for that car until it enters the free zone or the U. S. and it is still in your name all the way there so hope to God the purchaser has no accidents, especially if someone is hurt or killed. You drive the van to the border free zone or destroy it legally and with appropriate proof you have so done.

By the way, no matter what you are told, that car is in your name all the way to the U.S even if, in your mind you have sold it. Mexico could not care less. It is absolutely your responsibility and only your responsibility. If the purchaser walks, you take the dive.

We have done special permits for people to go to border and they can get their own insurance

Thank you. That has always been the song I've sung to others before learning about the ability to transfer title and get new plates from SD. This would leave ONLY the TIP in my name.
There's no way in hell I'll step foot in Texas anytime soon, so I will probably have it destroyed or I will see an attorney.
