Well, the unhappiest countries have good reason to be. Either the people are starving to death, partly because of unchecked global climate change, or because my wonderful country has bombed them nearly into extinction. Speaking of extinction . .

Interesting. Coincidence possibly? Maybe the pollsters just mistook chattering teeth for big smiles.

Perhaps it is what they do to keep warm, that makes them so happy.

That´s what democratic socialism does to you------makes you happy when of course you shouldn´t be.
How can they soak the rich with taxes and be happy. More fake news.

I lived in the City of Whitehorse for 4 years and I learned quite quickly that while, yes, some people drank, many more engaged in what for them was pretty typical outdoor winter activities like camping at -40c, dog sledding 1000 KM, and cross-country skiing (Whitehorse to Dawson City). Some even bicycled it. You know, the easy stuff. Consider your philosophy, Horatio.

Living on top of valuable natural resources like oil, gas, diamonds can sure work against you, other nations want to be your daddy.
I bet the USA was happiest in the 50s .. war over, lots of newlyweds, lots of new families, our best friend the television was invented, lots of innocent shows (peppered with cigarette ads).

Re: Global Happiness Index
I keep forgetting that the little party over in Korea in the early '50s was merely a Police Action. Though I admit it does seem that as long as people are dying, under whatever label, on other continents at sometimes right here at home, the USA is a happy place. And history bears this out: according to Wikipedia HERE and HERE, the US has been at war for most of it's existence. I'm glad, though, to see that most seem to have figured out that Leave it to Beaver wasn't a documentary on life in America.

You nailed it! Yes, it was the happiest time of my life, for the reasons you mentioned, plus the improved availability of both necessities and luxuries (no more rationing) as a result of rapidly improving economy in the USA. I spent the 1950s in high school and college, then married, had kids and saw the world, compliments of the USAF. It lasted until the early 1970s, when things began to fall apart. The slope is now very slippery.

Just read an article this morning in Washington Post which concludes that happiness is not necessarily based on wealth. They wrote that Latin American countries are consistently more relaxed, happy, and joyful. The most relaxed country in their study was Taiwan.

I found a study some years ago which stated that of all the communities they studied, a slum on the outskirts of Sao Paulo was the happiest. These people had nothing but each other. I wonder if Proctor & Gamble ever encountered it.

Re: Global Happiness Index
I'm a believer too that money doesn't buy happiness. One of the problems with money is that everyone wants it. Another is that a lot of people want to stick to you, gold digging babes and such. Same same.
I also have that problem without money. It's my boyish good looks, everybody wants it. Girls pinch my butt so much at times it's difficult to sit.
