No more plastic bags
As of a few days ago, Walmart and several other retailer's no longer have bags of any sort. Walmart was giving some customers boxes like at Costco.

In the long checkout line at Walmart that passes the candy on the right, they sell cloth bags. We have found bags to be an easy solution to the problem. Some organizations have been giving them away provided you don't mind having their logo with you.

If you don't like the logos..mist them over with spray paint.

Great idea, or paint an acrylic masterpiece on 'em! In my case, I don't give a whit....it was a "free" bag, so I don't mind them getting a little "free" advertising.

It was all over FB over a week ago that walmart had no more plastic bags; got stuck between 2 groups of people on Friday freakin' out over no more bags; they weren't happy about having to buy the green walmart bags; when the big green cloth bags get loaded lots of people can't carry them let alone get them in or out of their cart.

You have to adopt the mindset that the bags live in the cars. Not the house. Divide the bags up and put them in the cars. Then the trick is to put them back in the cars after emptying them! Soon it'll become habit. Or not. . .

Yeah. I got as far as putting them in the car. Then I kept forgetting to bring them in the store.

IS THERE HOPE HERE??!!!
I have a covered basket by the front door and after emptying them, I deposit them on it. Since they constitute an eyesore, it makes it's easy remembering to haul 'em out to the car when I leave.

Re: No more plastic bags
Now I realize when I saw a guy a few days ago with all of his stuff in the cart and nothing in a bag. I thought that was odd that he wanted to unload all of the individual items, about 30, into his car one by one. I guess that was when they started no bags ! We have been carrying reusable bags for 12 years to the stores and tianguis. You can buy the big plastic weave ones at the tiangus.

The green Walmart bags seem to disintegrate and rip easily. I just ordered two dozen canvas craft bags off Amazon. One set of 12 for each vehicle.

The guy that sells by the side of the road around Actinver has good solid bags that look like beach bags. Look for a handle that goes all the way under the bag so the handles don't break. Between the two that I have and a Costco freezer bag, I'll manage. They rinse out easily with a hose and I've had one of them for over 10 years.

Up north in the state of Washington, the stores provide paper, reusable , grocery bags. They will last maybe 5 to 8 times and when they ware out, the stores replace them for 25 cents per bag. At the Seattle Costco they provide you with used paper boxes much like what now is at the lakeside Walmart.

I was at the 'Everything' store in the plaza the other day, and they had no plastic bags either.

I think it's the law. Or something like that. Since the first of the year.

Re: No more plastic bags
Glad to see this finally, we, like many of you, have been using cloth bags for years.
When I was a kid in Germany( a looong time ago), my mom was using a couple of real nice, heavy duty leather bags for big stuff, and there were also some very handy netted bags. Maybe some of the older ideas were not so bad after all!

Those colorful plastic woven bags at the Ajijic tianguis are great. Very strong, mine have been used for 2 years and are good as new.

It just annoys me to have to buy bags to line the bathroom trash cans but I have several of the green Walmart bags.

An interesting article on the topic from National Public Radio:
Are Plastic Bag Bans Garbage?

Hmmm. That article is counterintuitive. One thing for certain is that Walmart saves money by not buying plastic bags and MAKES money selling the green ones. It would be advantageous if WM used biodegradable bags but they cost more.

Re: No more plastic bags
My world health warrior eldest daughter has pointed this unintended consequences out to me before about her Tesla, the beverage straw bans and the bags. She says it is all psycho-social to make people feel better about their efforts. Similar to recycling efforts and birth control programs it is just making the first world feel better. Nothing wrong with that.
