Eyeglasses
I don’t know if this belongs under Medical or not but will be getting a prescription for glasses for watching TV and driving. Where is the best place for price, selection & quality? Needles in my eye 3 times didn’t do anything except make my wallet 15,000 pesos thinner. Thanks!

Re: Eyeglasses
I get my reading glasses at the little store near the phone company (east of it on the end of the same strip).
She does a good job of doing a needle and drop free eye exam, the prices are reasonable and there's a decent selection of frames. Good luck.

Thanks! I knew there was a place on the Carretera but couldn’t remember where since I didn’t need the info before.

Re: Eyeglasses
There's an optometrist in Ajijic, just eats of Colon on Hildago. Salvatore. He's making progressive sun glasses for me, and he's very nice. Don't have the specs yet, so can't speak to quality. Hidalgo 6-A, (376) 966-0216.
Re: Eyeglasses
Another vote for Salvador on Hidalgo. He really seems to know what he's doing. My glasses will be back just after Feb 1. I'll repost then.

SALVAdor is on Hidalgo, first block west from the plaza on the left. He has done good work for me and uses good quality materials.

Re: Eyeglasses
I went to the place close to Telmex today after getting the prescription from the opthalmalogist. I couldn’t believe the price for a pair of regular prescription and a pair of prescription sunglasses = 6800 pesos.
By the way, I also highly recommend Dra. Mariana Diaz Salazar, the opthalmalogist at Quality Care.
Thanks for the recommendation for the eyeglasses place, Gringal and I appreciate the other recs as well.

Re: Eyeglasses
So, is that a good or a bad price? Does he sell any non-prescription sunglasses?

Re: Eyeglasses
Do yourself a favor. Go to a real Optometrist....a real eye Doctor. Buying glasses by price is foolish. You only have one set of eyes. I used to go to the self made eyeglass people and then my wife took me to a rel eye doctor. WOW, what a difference. I learned my lesson.
Picking any doctor by price is a big mistake.

Who do you consider to be a 'real' optometrist here?

Re: Eyeglasses
I'm pretty sure Dr. Pinto is an optometrist. He's the first one I went to here. Some people are under the impression that he is an ophthalmologist, but when I went back due to vision problems, he said he couldn't help because I needed cataract surgery and he referred me to an ophthalmologist, who did the surgery in Guad. He prescribed reading glasses after the cataract surgery. They worked poorly. Went to the optician preceding the one who was in the place Carry B went to, had an exam and got new glasses. They worked; I could see well for reading and computer. Next time I needed a prescription change, I had it done by the optician there now and the new glasses worked fine again. I didn't have any extras and selected a very simple set of frames, so I paid less than she did. That's my experience.
I don't know if Luz at LCS is an optician or an optometrist. My husband goes to her because he likes the clunky frames she carries.

Re: Eyeglasses
I have only ever gone to an Opthamologist… since I was three. I was told when I moved here that Dr. Pinto was one (wrong) and, he not only screwed up the prescription, the glasses he had made for me weren't correct either. You can take the prescription to any place that makes glasses. And I have had good luck with that little store between Telmex and Z gas.

Re: Eyeglasses
An Oftalmólogo is a doctor specializing in opthalmology & may perform surgery or prescribe medications, as well as prescriptions for lenses..
An "Optico" is just an eyeglass shop with a technician, who may or may not be an optician; definitely not an MD.

I just had occasion to go to LCS for some "talking books" and passed Luz' door sign, saying she is an optometrist..

Reading isn’t your strong suit, huh? I said I went to the opthalmalogist who gave me the prescription which I took to the place to get the prescription filled. I did NOT ask the price until AFTER I picked out the frames and I tried out what the finished glasses would be like with the gadget she has.

I consider it a good price because before cataract surgery I was blind as a bat since I was little and had astigmatism, myopia and later farsighted added to the mix so my glasses were always pricey. It always depends on the prescription and this one was simpler. However, I did get the better lenses and Polaroid in the sunglasses.
