I have only worn closed in shoes for the last four years. Have lived my life in Birkenstocks... even in Canada where my only concession to snow was to wear socks with my Birkies. Your theory doesn't fly.

I haven't worn closed-toe shoes since 1997. Damage to the toe nail caused compromised tissue which was ripe for fungus. But I am determined.

Not proposing a theory, it's a fact - skin needs to breathe. Fungal infections need good air circulation to heal. Chronic stubborn fungal infections occur in large breasted women between the breast and chest wall, under toenails, and in the groin area. All places that never see the light of day or good air circulation and are difficult to keep dry.

YMMV

I've never had a pedicure, a manicure or anything else that involves a place with chemical smells. Don't enjoy that kind of environment, so I torture my nails myself. I've had pretty good luck with Vicks VapoRub keeping the fungus under control, but it sneaks back if unwatched. I usually wear open sandals except for serious walking or cold weather.

I suggest going to DrAxe.com for remedies. I find this to be a valuable resource. You can search under Conditions.

This can also be caused by diabetes. That's how my wife was diagnosed several years ago.
