It was liked; my wife and I were very impressed with your singing.
If I had known then what I know now, I would have shaken your hand.
Thanks for the compliment.

Re: Singing at Vicki's Hideaway
The band was Jerry Mayfield & Carol Bedford. I learned about the gig by sending Carol (while she was still Stateside) an e-mail with my karaoke rendition of Jim Reeves' "Missing You." She informed me that she was visiting Lakeside, and I kept up with her schedule. Learning that she & Jerry would be performing at Vicki's last Friday, I made the trip around the lake just to hear her & Jerry (with the hope that they would invite me onstage.)Chapalagringa wrote:Live band? Jerry, during the break, asked me if I would sing; he told me that Dave had a couple of songs and that afterwards I could do a number.
Dave sang two -- very well. Then they asked me up. I did Kenny Rogers' song "Lucille."
It wasn't karaoke. (And I flubbed the lyrics; I hope nobody noticed.)

Re: Singing at Vicki's Hideaway
ohhhh...I bet that was allot of fun! So last night was your night! Wow! I'm so glad you weren't disappointed! There's nothing like a live band. Did they have a full band?
You don't drive home afterwards right?

Singing at Vicki's Hideaway
No, it was last Friday night. And it wasn't a "live" band in that sense. Jerry Mayfield has recorded tracks to which he sings. When I did my "Lucille" it was with Jerry's guitar accompaniment. Carol was behind me keeping the audience laughing with her antics (reported to me by Maria).Chapalagringa wrote:ohhhh...I bet that was allot of fun! So last night was your night! Wow! And, no, we did not drive back to Tizapán afterwards; we spent the night in El Parque at a friend's house.

No hockables, it's Jerry Mayfield at Vicki's Friday not karaoke - there is karaoke at La Bodega with Kitt and Vincent on Tuesday nights at 6pm. Hop on to the Events page and Dave has posted the details about Vicki's.

It is live rather than canned karaoke music. Jerry still plays and sings. It is just easier to manage than a full band

I'm surprised you can write this Dave. There's some die hard Karaoke people lakeside. Or there used to be.
What happened to all the Karaoke Lehrer?
Jerry's playing along with some of his pre recorded tracks I take it. Much easier than pulling a full band together, rehearsals, set up & take down.

I was always a big fan of Kenny Rogers and I doubt I could remember half the lyrics to Lucille...

Jerry's playing along with some of his pre recorded tracks I take it. Much easier than pulling a full band together, rehearsals, set up & take down.
There is a distinct difference between Karaoke and live. karaoke plays the original tracks in the original key and lets the performers emulate the original artist and that is all they can do.
I have been singing to live bands for 20 years including 2 open mic session per week, one of which has been going continuously for 18 years. When you sing to a live band you develop a style of you own and the band follows the singer not the other way around as the singer has to follow the band in karaoke.
The tracks such as those that Jerry uses are custom made for the singer and have been made to the style of that singer and in the key in which he sings. They therefore do not emulate the original as is the case in karaoke. They are not cheap, some of Jerry's were recorded in Nashville. I have tried karaoke and i hate it because I cannot put my own style into the song but I can and do sing to a few custom tracks made for me.
So Karaoke may be for some folks but not for me and I reserve my right to hate it

I don't really know. A little bit Jim Reeves, A little bit Jim Ed Brown and a whole lot more rolled into one.
My first memories are of German Bombers going over our house towards Coventry. Work out my age from that
BTW Jerry is even older than I am.

Cindy's was the only venue I visited on a regular basis. When she started making exceptions to her own "rules" for special people, I walked out and never went back. I understand that, in the meantime, she stopped doing karaoke music. Besides that, I don't relish traveling 50 miles (one way) to perform.

Dave, that is not entirely accurate. While it is true that the singer has to adapt to the musicians rather than the other way around, it is possible to change the key of the karaoke track and also the speed at which it plays. Cindy's equipment does that. Additionally, I have a program I downloaded from the Internet that does the same thing. I can understand that you prefer live music over that, but as for me -- I take what I can get.

Most of the karaoke eqpt available to sing to has no means to adapt to speed or key or maybe can only change one key up or down so it is a compromise.
For instance I sing "Almost Persuaded" in the key of E only. Most singers sang in the key of E and modulated to F# for the second part. My range is not good enough for that if I start in E and if I try a lower key then the first part is too low
With karaoke I would be stuck or not sing it at all

Re: Singing at Vicki's Hideaway
Yeah....but one's man's expensively created tracks......are another man's karaoke.
I've got so many originals that need tracks. All I play is guitar...been looking around up here. Hopefully I'll find some new studio who'll cut me a break!

H-m-m-m-m...
This thread has gone into the "Twilight Zone" -- posts that were here before are no longer here.
Somebody needs to think about the old adage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Is somebody thinking that members are so addled they can't make the connection between various posts and ignore tangents??? I ain't got a problem skipping over irrelevant comments from others.
