Three Kings Day Sat. Jan 6 in the Ajijic Plaza
Three Kings Day (Los Tres Reyes) - Sat, Jan 6
January 6 is Three Kings Day (Los Tres Reyes) in Mexico. This is the day the children get gifts and a collection is taken up a few weeks before so there will be plenty to go around.
The gifts are handed out at the Ajijic plaza and there are usually 3 kings handing out the gifts at approximately 6 pm. There is usually other activities going on in the plaza and maybe the malecon too.

It is also the day of the Rosca de los Reyes when families and friends get together and eat the sweet cake with the figurines inside.. the people who get the figurine(s) have to throw the next party which can be another get together or on Feb 2 they have to host the party for the Candalaria when people drink atole and eat tamales.. It is a commemoration of Jesus being presented at the temple.
The tradtion of the Rosca de los Reyes is actually an old French pagan tradition when people got together to elect the king of the fiesta.. read the guy who would pay for the fiestas . In the middle ages they started the custom of serving a simple sweet round or oval cake with a crown and the person who had the fava been inside who host the fiesta on Feb 2 little by little it took on all the Catholic symbolism but like many other traditions it was a pagan tradition to start with, The Spaniards brought that tradition with htem when they came to Mexico.
The French bakery in West Ajijic has both cakes , the Rosca de los Reyes and the galette des rois. With the galette des rois they should have a cardboard crown for the king or queen, I saw them last year but I have not seen them this year..

We went to the plaza at 6pm to watch the events and in the usual fashion there was still nothing happening by 7:30pm so we left. Was anyone there late enough to see anything?

The best place to celebrate 3 Kings Day is Cajitatlan. They have Kings all dressed up in boats who arrive with goodies and the whole town greets them on the shore. Looks a little like Columbus arriving. Be advised though, the whole town is packed with tourists too. Nice town though, I like it there. The lake is toxic though.
