Just busted by Transito police.
Pickup w/2 cops pulled me over; 1 minute later another pickup with another 2 cops come to the scene (Pemex just before Chapala Haciendas).
My crime? I have a U.V. cover on my back plate. I immediately tore it off. Sorry, after the fact.
I took the cover off and offered to pay the fine there (I said I knew it was $200). No deal, they said tow it away and I pay $2,700 impound, etc.
I took pictures of them on my cell.
I said take it and we waited in shade. One pickup drove off.
One cop came over and had me sign an infraction notice.
Gave me back my D.R. license (lucky they didn't see itt was expired).
Told me to pay within 10 days in Chapala.
Violation Article 177 Infraction VIII. Someting about Article 165 VI and 62 X.
They left w/no $$ but made me delete the pictures.
Esta es Mexici.
Go tomorrow to pay.

I thought about that. If I can't drive it on the streets, what am I going to do w/it?$35,000+ is a lot for a paperweight.
I wish someone knew if there is a specific motor vehicle code covering that point.
And The $$#&^&*^ thing is, it there is no way to challenge getting a citation as I recall. If you don't pay, the just put it on your registration for the next year.

Yep, that's why you best stay on this side of the law.

I can't internalize that there is no way to fight ticket here.
And the other two pulled u I'm sure hoping to get a piece of the action.
I go this morning to pay the fine.

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
I find it a bit ironic that you must of known that your license cover was a violation of the law. Do you just like to complain and think the law does not apply to you, or are you really just Clueless?

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
I have clear plastic covers over both my front and rear license plates (U.S. plated vehicle). Is a U.V. cover something different? Tinted maybe? If I am in violation of some Mexican please let me know!

Be careful about violating Mexicans. They don't like it. (yeah, I know it was a slip up, but couldn't resist)

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
Any cover over the license plate that will obscure a photo cam is a violation of Mexican Law. Why would a cover over the rear plate be needed?

Well T-Gringo, I see you're falling into lock-step with some others here who like to be nasty.
Yes, I was clueless about having a clear U.V. cover on my rear plate. I figured there might be others that don't know either so I posted what I did.
My fine was $36 paid the next working day. And it wasn't at the Municipal Palace or the Transito office near there, it was at the motor vehicle office on Degllado. Sorry if I spelled it wrong.

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
So you did have a clear cover over the rear plate which was considered a Jalisco traffic violation:
Article 177. VIII. "Driving with license plates covered or obstructed, either totally or partially or using other plates with numbers that impair numbers of the other plates."
Perhaps just to be on the safe side I will remove mine. It was attached just over 15 years ago and after >250,000 miles the original plate still looks like new.

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
Yep best to take it off. When they see these they suspect it is there to impede a photo radar ticket. The only caveat is that foreign plates aren't subject to photo radar tickets so I'm not sure they would bother you.

What is the legal standing right now of photo radar tickets? I thought there was some sort of legal challenge to that practice of enforcement.

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
Yes, I also heard that the photo radar is currently on hold. This rings true as I haven't seen that portable device they use to set up around Ixthulacan for over 6 months.
Of course they will still give you a ticket as per that other law about obstructing your plate.

Clueless is just that Clueless.. He drives without any knowledge of the laws, then posts on here when he gets caught... To the best of my knowledge driving with your license plate covered has been an infraction of the law for at least the last 10 years..

No clueless just needs attention he has been living here for longer than many people here and pretends he does not know anything about anything so he can posts and posts about every little details he can think of..

Agree.
Plus, there is a need to either be, or be perceived as, a victim. Clueless is a lawyer who has been here a long time and is well aware of the laws of Mexico and has a Mexican spouse to fill in any blanks he may have. Some people, Pedro instantly comes to mind, enjoy negative attention more than positive attention. I think that's the case here as well.

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
Well, my plastic covers are removed both front and back of my vehicle so I now have shiny new plates from 2001 on display!
Interestingly, I have a brand new, clear, unbreakable, UV poly-carbonate license plate cover still in the original wrapper that was in my stuff from the U.S., and on the back, in small print, it states that the plastic cover maybe illegal in some states/provinces. I learn something unexpected every day in Mexico....

Re: Just busted by Transito police.
I don't have a Mexican wife, and do you think everyone here knows every law there is? Trailrunner, do you know all the vehicle laws? All the laws about Freccs? All the water laws? All the laws regarding building and setbacks? Cite me the laws on double parking and how fast and far you can drive a car on a highway in reverse?
And BTW, has anyone tried driving on he bypass from Chapala to Ajijic and following the posted speed limits? Just for fun, I did that today. Sure got a lot of drivers behind me pissed-off and making unsafe passings of me while I did the legal limits for about 10-minutes.
What a hoot.
