Salvation? Empty Salvation?

Post by Trailrunner Fri Nov 10, 2017 7:47 am

Lots of comments and questions on TOB and FB regarding disappointing internet speeds provided by TM - by newbies. Seems landlords renting to new folks are promising there is no problem with the internet speeds in the house and some are moving in and finding 2 down. All saying this is a deal breaker for them!

How quickly we get accustomed to being in constant communication. Doesn't anyone remember dial up?
That being said, I believe that it's a deal breaker when they're younger and still working via the internet. They have to get more specific about their requirements for speed and connectivity. Someone who only uses the net for e-mail would think a slow speed was just hunkeydorey and would be fine. You want to stream television or do video conferencing then the speed has to be higher and be consistent. Does the word consistent even translate into Spanish?
If you're renting sight unseen, then SPECIFY your needs and get it in writing. If you're physically looking at houses then take your laptop or iPad and see what the speeds are for yourself.
And while you're at it, take something with you to check and make sure the outlets are REALLY grounded and don't just assume that a three prong cover indicates that they are.
All imho of course.

I do a bit of website work, surf the net and stream Netflix, etc. I generally have no problem with TelMex. Now if you require reliable, chop free video conferencing then that would be a problem.

And your speed is generally 10 mb/sec right CBob? Most of the people complaining are getting around 2 mb/sec.
Anyone here remember using Eudora for e-mail? Internet time was precious and expensive in Mexico. You used dial-up to connect and download your mail. Then you disconnected from the internet, read your mail, responded to your mail, then connected again to send then disconnected again. And heaved a huge sigh of relief that you were actually able to get it done. That was my first experience, in Mexico in SMA when line of sight was required for connection ... in the same way that Laguna Net was operating. Then came CABLE and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven because I could operate a Vonage phone.
We've come a long way in a short period of time.

According to these sites, some people moving here seem to have unrealistic expectations lacking basic geography and somehow missing the fact that Ajijic is actually in Mexico!

My max is 10MBPS but like most others it fluctuates greatly depending on the time of day. I have seen 20MBPS in Chapala so that is the best place for the newbies to locate........

There are days when my internet crawls like a wounded turtle.  Others; no problem.  I'm just glad that it moves at all and I can stream Netflix.

Some people moving here aren't doing their research about either Ajijic or Mexico in general and their awakening will be rude, indeed.  If they find too many "deal breakers", they will leave.  Bye.

Some of us grew up without TV, phones in every home, internet, cellphones, automatic transmissions and antibiotics. We made it! Oh, yes, we were also innoculated against smallpox.  It is still out there in the CDC and in Russia. Just think, if it gets out, only the geriatrics will survive. Most of you are doomed.  Oh, yeah: We remember how to walk, ride a horse, or bike to a neighbor to chat, or even send a telegram to those further away.  Do they still deliver them?  How many of you remember PTT offices in many countries, where you went and waited for an empty phone booth, made your assisted call and then paid at a counter. We were happy, didn‘t complain and thought that life was pretty damned good.

I used to have to walk a mile to school everyday in waist high snow. It was too deep for the dogsled. At least the igloo had central heating......

Before you, people lived in a caves, ate raw animal meat and acorns, and died of old age at 30. They were content because the concept of happy had not yet been invented. They didn’t complain either.

Remember that we were a lot shorter when we were kids. Waist high is relative. :)

I had to cut through 2 yards, watching out for the Dobie, run down the beach, all the while dodging waves and falling coconuts.

Well we had the sled however we usually had to eat the dogs by mid winter if the caribou hunt was slim.

No, you didn‘t. There is no such thing as “up“, or even “down“. In fact, time is just a figment of our imaginations. We are all confused. “Go West, Young Man“ will simply get you East. Oh well!
