Treasure of the Sierra Madre

About three weeks ago, I ran into an old friend in a Guadalajara restaurant. A lifetime ago, we had both worked for the same lumber company as timber cruisers in the mountains of the coastal Sierra Madre Occidental from Tapla to the area around Casimiro Castillo. He was originally from La Huerta and served as my guide as we searched for top grade mahogany and spanish cedar trees and a few other exotics. We had always marvelled at the beauty of this stream not far from where it enters the Río Purificación which eventually enters the Pacific at Tenacatita. A few years back 22 hectares came up for sale and he and other siblings were able to acquire property on both sides of the stream thinking one day of building some cabins for a small retreat. When he asked if I would like to come and visit our old stomping grounds I jumped at the chance.

They have a small ramada for shade but are thinking of letting their children take on the task of building the cabañas. They have planted over 600 primavera and rosa morada trees though. They are intent on leaving it as natural and unspoiled as possible. It is still pretty isolated. The road into the property is 6 km off a dirt road that runs for about 15 km from the nearest paved road. You have to ford a couple shallow streams (during the rains) on the way. The water is very clean as it comes from both the rain and several springs higher up. There is no agriculture so no chemicals running into it. There are a couple of small cattle raising outfits up stream but the water flows fast and through enough sand to filter organics. It had been raining heavily a couple of days before so that is why the water was slighty murky. Most times it's clear.

No, they don't grow where there are no communications. They like being in touch so they know when to skedaddle if necessary. Not far from there but on the other side of this range they do. A lot!
