Social Security ? Empty Social Security ?

Post by Trailrunner Fri Oct 06, 2017 7:29 am

SS has my Mexican correos address for correspondence and does direct deposit with the pension. I have had to sign up for a mail forwarding service for other reasons and when I tried to change SS from my correos address to the Laredo TX address, the consulate said I had to go to the nearest SS office in the US to do that. What?

So I tried to sign up for 'My SS' online in order to make the change of address and lo and behold one can't have a 'My SS' account if you show an international address. What?

Does this sound right? Is there no way to do this? I hesitate to make changes as it's all working smoothly as is but I won't need the correos address anymore except to receive the once a year 'are you dead yet' notice from SS. Ideas?

Thanks Marrell. So, looks like I'll have to continue to pay for correos for the one piece of mail a year - 300 pesos/yr - not a big deal.

You can have that mail delivered to your home address, as another poster said. It has been delivered that way to us, too. We also do our banking and credit card transactions through a financial institution in the U.S. that is set up for people living in foreign countries and have no problems with it. If you need further information about that, PM me.

Yes, I know I can have it delivered to my house or to my PO box in Chapala. I want to have the 'dead' letter sent to my new Laredo address so that I receive it in a timely manner. Last one took 3 months.

In order to do that, I have to change the address from Chapala to Laredo, which it won't let me do.

When you call, tell them specifically that this is a mailing address change only for the purposes of efficiency. Maybe you can have both addresses on file... but it may be an effort for their little government pea brains to actually get it.

Yes. And we ARE talking about the US government now. I'm thinking the best move is not to rock the boat in any way and just bite the bullet and pay the 300 pesos at least for one more year. I like flying under the radar. No big. Maybe the Excited States will calm down a little in that year. . .  lolol

If it's any consolation, they have little pea brains in government offices in Canada too. Didn't used to be that way and the pea brains seem to be getting younger. Scary eh?

My MX address is my local post office box.... Years ago they would deliver
post office box mail to your house. They knew me and just started deliverying
but that changed (back when the post office was on Colon across from what is
now Diane Pearl's)) But no more.....
I got nowhere trying anything other than what the OP was told.
SSA in Guadalajara is extremely helpful but they could not make an exception to
the policy.

Thanks. Yes, Ferret, it's true in the US too.

Just for info. . .the last conversation I had with SS in the US was about 10 years ago when I was trying to sign up and had difficulties getting the e-deposit going. It took 3 months to receive money after signing up with the very nice people at the consulate. I never could get a real person to explain the situation to and my option wasn't listed in the phone tree.

Finally, I found a number for a jefe and called. Here is how the call went, although it was successful eventually, this was the attitude:

SS - SS, how may I help you?
Me - Hi, my name is and I live in Mexico and . . . I succinctly told my little novela and asked for help.
SS - Silence
Me - Hello? Are you there?
SS - YES I'M HERE! I'm just listening while you go ON AND ON.

See what I mean?

All of my contacts with SS have been through Guadalajara. I have found them to be receptive and helpful. YMMV.

I had to whine a bit, but succeeded in getting them to send me the forms by email and complete the process that way. The first person I talked to insisted on our arriving at a very early hour and that was that; no other option. I called and got another rep. who was a human being. Don't give up.

I have my "dead yet letter" sent to the Sol y Luna office in Ajijic. I already pick up mail there and so far it has worked well.

I can't change an international address with SS without doing it in person in the U.S.. Rather use the Laredo addy as rather reflect that I live in the U.S.. I don't trust 45.

I think I'll make a bunch of copies of the form next year and just mail one in every Feb.

I’ve been getting SS for almost 15 years but have never received a ‘dead’ letter. I live NOB. What am I doing wrong (or right as the case may be!)?

Those letters are sent only to those who've given SS a foreign address. With the reputation of losing mail by Coreos I gave them my US address.
