Rental Size. Wife and I disagree.
Hello all,
My wife and I will be visiting for our first time in February 2018. We are staying 2 weeks to get a feeling for the area. I have been looking at long term rentals online to get an idea of pricing etc. I find myself skipping listings that seem to large regardless of the price. My wife thinks I am being to "logical"
We are currently living in a 2 bed, 2 bath, apartment with 1100 sf. I see a lot of listings for rentals there with 3-4 bedrooms with a lot more sf. The first thought I have when I see the listing is "we will never use 3 bedrooms and the sf is too big" (even when the location and price are good). Do I need to readjust my thinking? I am not asking or looking for specific areas, just your thoughts.
Thanks.

Square footage measurements here are not like NOB. Here they usually include everything under a roof including covered patio's and garages. Otherwise if the price/location is right who cares if it's big. You don't have to heat or AC it....IMO.

....or predial (property taxes) to pay if you are renting.

It's also a lot easier to get used to more space than you need than not enough.
Go with the location and price.
Welcome and best of luck.

CanuckBob: thanks for the explanation. I forgot about what the calculations include/exclude for sf.
Gringal: that is exactly what my wife says about more space.
Time to research using her wants.

I was offered a great deal on a rental. It was larger than any home I have ever lived in -- even with a family. Even though the rent was lower than I was paying, I almost turned it down because it was "too big." Two years later I am sprawled out in my big house, loving it and the great deal I have. I agree with the advice to go for location and price.

My house in Mexico is much bigger than the one in the states. So I can add that to the long list of changes to enjoy when I go SOB. Weather, culture, food, friends and you wouldn't believe the change in ambience one feels when living in a bigger house

If you're renting a furnished place having an extra room or two gives you a place to put the stuff you don't like.

We have friends that used your logic buying their first house here. Two years later, they found their new found hobbies required more space. Now they have a place twice the size of the first one and are much happier.

Thanks for all of the information. I will readjust my thinking about the size I am looking at.
Lunateak, I see your pic is a Weimaraner. We have a 10yo Weimador. He is black with a white star on his chest.

She may be a purebred Weimaraner. That was taken shortly after we rescued her in 2009. She's probably 11 years old now.

OK if am a newbie to Chapala and am looking for "apartment" rentals not a house - what is the best website, forum or FB page that lists 1-2 bedroom apartments, in pesos. Not interested in paying in US $, and don't want upscale. Anyone?

On this Forum, follow the path INSIDE LAKESIDE :: For Sale/Rent/Wanted/Free :: For Rent and you will see a pinned topic of rental links. Scroll down several posts for a list of rental links. There are no specific apartment rentals but you will find apartments and casitas included.
