Re: Nuts
walnut.....nogal(es) .....in shell...... nogales de cascara.
pecans can be pacanas but generally in Mexico they are referred to as nuez/nueces.

I think you are right..... that is a more used name for walnuts and nogal for the walnut tree.
Nueces seems to cover everything if nobody knows what exactly it is. Hard to figure out what exactly you are getting when they are selling helado con nuez.....probably pecans. Cacahuates don't usually get thrown into the group.

Re: Nuts
I went to my local nut emporium and googled a walnut picture to show what I wanted. She said she had never seen one before

How strange! The famous "chile en nogada" derives its name from the walnut. The dish is tradionally served in September, "el mes de la patria" not solely because it has the three colors of the flag but also coincides with the walnut harvest. She is certainly not a very knowledgeable salesperson of her product.

Re: Nuts
Also strange is that Nogales is a place name for many streets, cities, and other proper noun named subjects. Did the Spanish/Mexicans just pull it out of the clouds?
Finding walnuts in Mexico not exactly like finding osos polares or pinguinos.

Pinguinos are on the shelf of just about every abarrote and every OXXO in the country!

Re: Nuts
A guy walks into a psychiatrist office naked and wrapped in plastic. The psychiatrist says to him: "Well, I can clearly see your nuts."

You got me......
I was thinking dynamic pinguinos as opposed to static And I suppose there are some ositos polares in the juguetrias, in fact, I think one of my nietas has one.
I retract!

Is that some obscene practice or the product derived from butternut.

Since butternut is a kind of squash, the answer is no. Think peanut butter but healthier and more sophisticated.
