If you can't provide rustic charm, interesting drug use history, go for the next best seller - Sexy! Ajijic was home to one of the largest "erotic fiction" (which the F.B.I. called porn) group of writers in North America. Earl Kemp - Greenleaf. Here is a link to some stories of that time, the Mexico parts don't start until the second story.

Re: More info on Ajijic's bid for Pueblo Magico status
Look guys, I hate to be negative and I would LOVE it if Ajijic became a Pueblo Mágico but unless the process is completely political (And it may be; what do I know?) I doubt it will ever happen unless and until private money starts flowing in to support tourist-oriented projects and I don't see anyone making that happen. If I read the CRITERIA correctly, THAT needs to be in place BEFORE the application.

Quit reading the criteria. (I have read it, in Spanish, like you.) And I agree, there is NO WAY Ajijic qualifies under the "criteria", at least when I read it two years ago. But neither have some of the others. (I'm looking at you Sayulita! And several of the rest...)
In the beginning it was a great little program that identified truly special small towns within Mexico. It has become a victim of its own success. At this point, the Pueblo Magico program has been completely dilluted (currently 111!!!) and they are handing the designations out like candy.
It's entirely political and only depends on who has the palancas.

Domingo Márquez. - With the intention that Ajijic enters the federal program of Magic Towns, the city council of Chapala announced that now they will regulate the itinerant commerce that is put by the highway Ajijic-Chapala and the malecón. This, since it is expected an inspection by the Ministry of Tourism, to find out if the people meet the requirements to be a candidate for the federal program.
There are plans to carry out various activities, such as banning colored business cards, commercial announcements, tarpaulins, regulating the noise of gas distributors, and the sound equipment of upcoming election campaigns, said Chapala Mayor Javier Degollado .
The commercials will also be regularized both in the size and colors in which the facades will be painted. The norm will start mainly by the businesses of the Chapala highway and downtown area, although other businesses will not be exempt, since the polygon of the municipality that is sought to declare as "Magical", it ranges from the division of La Floresta to La Canacinta; That is to say, practically all the territory of Ajijic.
In addition to the signage and the itinerant commerce, of which no new concessions have been given (according to the delegate Chuni Medeles, there are about 20 to 30 sale permits for the road and another 15 or 20 on the malecon), another obstacle to To overcome for Ajijic to be declared as Magic Town is the deficiency in the garbage collection.
Faced with this problem, the city council announced that it is implementing a plan to expedite the collection in response to the frequent decomposition of the harvesting trucks. They have also said that there will be penalties for those who do not respect the times of garbage collection.

To implement new measures for the regulation of the urban image, several changes need to be made to the Regulations on Public Welfare, Urban Image, Ecology, Markets, etc., which need to be approved by the town council and finally the new standard will be published In the municipal gazette so that it can enter into force.
Before this, in about a month will start the remodeling of the entrance of the town by the Chapala-Ajijic highway. The bike path will be completed in the section where the village crosses, the sidewalk will be finished, facades will be painted and the truck stops will be established. Everything to make Ajijic look impeccable when they come inspectors of the secretariat of Tourism.
Mayor Javier Degollado explained that the rehabilitation of the urban image of the entrance of Ajijic goes in conjunction with the aspiration of the population to the title, but, although the desired appointment is not achieved, to implant the order is necessary not only to be declared as Pueblo Magico but so that the jijitoscos live better.
"Let's go or do not go, we must regulate so that we are happy, happy, and not do it for that, do it for ourselves," said the mayor of Chapala, Javier Degollado.
The municipality of Chapala has until October to submit the registration requirements to the federal program and will be until 2018 when it is announced whether Ajijic received the appointment as Pueblo Magico.
