Skeeter Season - the war begins
Skeeters are emerging this week up in the hills. These are the little black ones, which will grow into the big black ones. I have lemon eucalipto tree, and you can rub the leaves on your skin, but I have decided to order some essential oil to make up a body butter mosquito repellent. This is the number one choice in the U.S. right now, by a company called "Repel". It is approved by the CDC and Consumer Reports has scored it very highly. The bottle says 6 hours, but their labs found 8 hours protection. Some people can be sensitive to the oil though. Here is a link to Mercado Libre:

You can order from the U.S.A. or Europe - but generally liquids and oils cannot be shipped by air.
I would like to learn how to make these sticks, and then teach a local person how to make and sell them.

Re: Skeeter Season - the war begins
Why would skeeters be emerging from up in the dry hills, since they breed in water. . .?

Re: Skeeter Season - the war begins
Since that last rain we have seen a few skeeters here in Ajijic village too. Not sure why one rain seems to activate them but it did.

Re: Skeeter Season - the war begins
I just sent out this e-mail to a number of friends... I have deleted names.
Greetings! I am forwarding this string of e-mails for a reason and that is to tell you about the Skeeter Vac model #3100. It does NOT require electricity and a 20 pound tank of propane lasts about a month (according to XXX in another e-mail). If you know anything about northern Ontario in the Spring then you'll know that the skeeters are swarming, plentiful and vicious. XXX got this thing going at the beginning of May and just left it running. They were able to work outside on the property this last weekend without very much discomfort. That is highly unusual as it has been a rainy spring and there are a number of creeks and a river on the property. Usually, they go up in the middle of May but don't return until the July 1st weekend because of the mosquitoes. This year will be very different.
I remember helping the XXXXX rebuild the cottage on Lake Christie near Perth, Ontario and having to wear a bee keeper's hat rig, gloves, long pants, long sleeved shirt to wade through black clouds of mosquitoes. Alvalarah in Muskoka is no different... until now.
Amazon.com (or .ca) sells these. The model #3100 is available but there is also a newer model #5100.
I hope that this information will be helpful to someone. As always, please do your own reading and research, I'm just reporting our experience.
Hugs, XXXXXXX

(this one is a little stronger, produces more CO2, and has a rollable CART!)
