Standard IFR flight rules require that you have enough fuel to fly to your alternate and have a 45 minute reserve fuel on board before takeoff.

It doesn't sound to me like that they were legal either northbound or southbound. I certainly wouldn't want to be on a flight with a 10 minute reserve fuel load.

There was a flight in South America recently that ran out of fuel going into Columbia? recently. That is just unacceptable. You know the flight times and you know the hourly burn rate.

I flew for the AF for 7 years and stuff happens. One blown tire, or an engine explodes or a thunderstorm forms and you are toast without fuel to go somewhere else.
