Black bean crisis
Forget the fuel shortage. Why has there not been any discussion on the canned black bean shortage? With the chili cook off just around the corner it is time to make a practice batch. I went to Walmart only to find out they have been without black beans for a week. After talking to some other customers I find out everyone has been out of them. They can't be found anywhere. I tried to organize a protest out in the parking lot but no one would join me. I hear the price of black beans is going up 30% next week so they should be plentyiful then.

OMG!!!! Does this mean I will have to move to another country? Not sure I can endure two crisis in a month.....
Why are you putting beans in chili?
Dried black beans are available at El Torito, bottom shelf across from the tomatoes in the produce aisle.

Jeeeeeez, talk about overreacting. . . lol
I bought a package of them yesterday at SL, bulk section, about 25 pesos. Saw them today in a different package at WM.
All is well with the world!

Why do you need the canned ones? Buy dried, soak overnight, cook with onion and garlic, eat/make chili. . .better than canned. imho

Re: Black bean crisis
Yeah, why ARE you putting beans in chili? LOL Sorry but a true crisis would be a shortage of Panditas or ice cream. Black bean shortage is a very minor inconvenience.

Well, ahem, there is really no black bean shortage crisis - SL, WM, Torito have them. . .BUT, our resident gourmand, it seems, prefers the CANNED variety. Diosmio.

Re: Black bean crisis
I have always made chili with beans and meat...usually canned red kidney beans which you will search heaven and earth to find here or pay through the nose.
You make what you grew up with and like. I bet Bob is also fussy about the combo of spices he uses too.
They put peas on pizza in Brazil apparently...each to his/her own.

Ya and using the dried you never know if they are done or not, I prefer canned or packaged also, ready to go! I got 2 cans the other day at a yard sale and they expire in 2018.

Re: Black bean crisis
I was just in Super Lake and looked for the canned variety of black beans and only saw refried canned black beans. Why would there be a run on regular canned black beans? Is this for an entry in the cook-off? If so, maybe it's sabotage by a competitor. The only other place that might have them are the little mom and pop shops.

A couple of weeks ago I looked for black beans all over the place and could not find any either so I bought some dry ones and immediately found a can of canned one but I cannot remember where..Someplace where I usually do not go..

Re: Black bean crisis
Soak beans 4 hours, fraze up some garlic & onion in a little oil, add some chicken broth, fresh epazote and cilantro and the beans. No salt! Throw it in a pressure cooker and cook on high for about 30 minutes. Better than any canned.

Yeah, man!
I guess the 'secret' ingredient in these chili cook-offs is . . . canned beans! Who'd a thought.

Re: Black bean crisis
To me, adding beans of any kind to chili is as a filler. I can see canned beans now labeled as, "Chili Helper". I do know about chili as I spent the night in Turlingua once.
Seriously, I am looking forward to the cook off to see what local color has done to chili.

Re: Black bean crisis
In the past most of the chili's at the cook off are different varieties of the conventional "beans and meat" chili found NOB. I have even seen Mexican entries (including local restaurants) using beans. Those doing the Mexican style "bean less" Chili con carne don't seem to place that well in the judging.
This year there will be actual judges as well as a "peoples choice" award so we may see more Mexican style.

Chili is like pizza, hamburgers and pasta dishes. Seems that what you grew up eating becomes the standard. If you did not grow up eating it, then what you first had representing the food.

We all have our comfort foods. Mine is chili made with canned kidney beans, canned stewed tomatoes, 3 chopped dark local dried peppers (HOT), and LOTS of dark chili powder. A fairly expensive recipe when cooked here, as the canned goods are expensive. But hey, I know what I need to be happy. When I can't get dark chili powder here, that's when I panic. Over the years, I've smuggled in a number of bottles.

Re: Black bean crisis
When I lived NOB, I made a mean Green based on New Mexican Green Chili. I can't get the frozen Hatch chili down here so I haven't made it in years. Where I'm from, red chili had beans, green didn't. Pinto or black beans - NO kidney beans!

Super Lake has all kinds of the pre-fab "Chili Powders" used in the NOB style recipes.

OK everyone, you can breath easy and cancel any pending protests, the crisis has been resolved. Walmart has black beans again and I understand Sorianas does too.
