Eastern Airlines flight 980
"On New Year's Day in 1985, Eastern Air Lines Flight 980 was carrying 29 passengers and a hell of a lot of contraband when it crashed into the side of a 21,112-foot mountain in Bolivia. For decades conspiracy theories abounded as the wreckage remained inaccessible, the bodies unrecovered, the black box missing. Then two friends from Boston organized an expedition that would blow the case wide open."

Very interesting...
No blood, no bodies and no black box!
Anyone remember this?

That was very interesting and informative but will it ever be solved?
Is it as simple as crashing into the mountain? Or was it contraband? Or money?

"Magnetic tape revolutionized broadcast and recording. When all radio was live, it allowed programming to be recorded. "
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_tape
_-----------------------_--------------------
Magnetic tape was found at the crash site, isn't it strange that that was on a flight to begin with?
Wouldn't it interfere with radio transmission to the tower at the airport?
Quote from article:
"Flying home, we thought we still might have a shot at answering the last one. We had that roll of magnetic tape Dan found on the first day of searching. And based on nothing more than photos we could find online, it looked pretty similar to what would have been inside a flight recorder. '

That tells me! The flight recorder had been found on a prior trip, tampered with and smashed into the ground. Whoever probably thought it would never be found.

This was Judith Kelly' account and the the 2nd trip to the mountain in 1985. Her husband perished in the flight.
Another question why was the plane 12 miles off course?
The plane's last radio transmission gave no indication the pilot was having any problems or that the plane was off course.
Per the article why were there no radar tracks? More questions!

AH Ha!!! Another theory alcohol was involved. Read the NTSB report here:
https://operationthonapa.com/unsolved-questions-4477dfb9b898#.qtriztu99
"The official description of this crash by the FAA lists the accident as a “Controlled Flight Into Terrain,” defined in the same document as follows:" see above link^^^
The guys from the tower were totally drunk and misled the plane. The tower ordered the plane to go down from 10,000 meters altitude to 5,000. The pilot followed the orders of the tower of course, but: the plane was not behind Illimani, it was in front of Illimani. Now the plane was way too low to pass the Illimani massif and heading directly towards it. It was the New Years’ Eve, top of the rainy season. Visibility was poor, otherwise the mountain would have been visible from very far. What I assume is that the pilot tried to gain altitude to pass the summit in the last moment (his last and only chance to save his, the crews and the lives of the passengers). He turned right and violently upward in full speed — the valley closes there, it’s a death trap (to the left the terrain would have opened up, but the pilot had to decide in a part of a second when he saw the mountain in front of him!). From what I saw I’m convinced that crew and passengers knew about the danger: the seat belts I found were closed. The impact must have been full speed and super heavy. No chance to survive this!"
^^^^^^
This is a theory.
I just saw Dan Futrell has an app and is seeking all opinions. So if you have an idea!
Operation Thonapa
Named after the Incan god of knowledge, Operation Thonapa is the expedition to find the black box of Eastern Flight 980, by Dan Futrell and Isaac Stoner.

CBob, can we get one of those dog muzzles for this guy? He certainly loves multiple postings, even when no one answers him!

Re: Eastern Airlines flight 980
Do you not realize how hard he has to work...first he asks the question ...then he has to research the answer,
even as he argues with himself whether the question was fair and then if the answer was strong enough ...then the agony of waiting for his own response to his careful research...and the the embarrassment
of his own response to his own answer and staying at his computer in case he receives a comment from himself.....it is worse than being answered by Bennie XXLVII or Gringal asking if he tried the new cabbage rolls, as if he has time to go out and try the cabbage rolls while he works to answer himself........
