Wow! I didn't realize you could get north Atlantic lobster anywhere around here. Usually around Christmas and New Years I would have lobster 3 or 4 times. It's one of the few things I've been missing on my first trip Lakeside. Mind you, a 2.5 lb lobster would only set me back about $15 Canadian on the wharf which is less than a mile from my house.

Yes, but now you are a lot further from the source than you were then. The price seems quite reasonable when you consider what it takes to get it here.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
Good point. I suppose it's not practical to think the lobster could hitchhike here.

Last year I bought 4 live one and half pound spiny lobsters, fresh off the boat in El Faro,Michoacan for 200 pesos total, not the same as Maine lobsters, but very good and a lot less expensive.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
I just bought 8 spiny lobsters off the beach in Chacala for $450 pesos. They were delicious.
Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
Considering the family financial resources, I've learned to be fond enough of the little langostini at the beach. There are just some things, like those delicious Aussie lobster tails, Eastern lobsters and abalone steaks, that had to be left behind as fond memories. I didn't "leave my heart in San Francisco", but my taste buds go all nostalgic once in while for some of my favorite foods.
However, if fate takes me back up north for an occasion, I have every intent of "pigging out" on every kind of lobster known to the local restaurants. Yum.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
The spiny lobsters season is not real long. Don't remember dates. Remember there is no claw meat and the bodies are smaller than Maine lobster. OK but I won't buy more. Shrimp or Chacales (river prawns) for me

Take a look at the cost of cauliflower in Toronto. Makes Gossips' lobster price look okay:

You're killin' me! The best place to eat them is right there beside the ocean where they're boiling them.. enjoy till stuffed...then wade into the ocean to clean up. You're making me homesick.
I can never find them here (Midsouth NOB)...people seem to be OK with the so inferior snow crab. Once you've had the "good stuff".... that includes the clams, salmon, oysters... and oh yes, road side stands where you can smell the strawberries the minute you open your car door.... and the huge variety of apples! ARGH!! Deep fried anything can never compete with NW produce... and southern pond raised catfish and little crawdads....compared to the fresh everything in the PNW?. Now I'm just making myself sad.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
Are you not in Texas, Kip? If so. . .imho soft shell crab is on par with abalone and lobster in my book. I miss them and OR crab as well. Oh well. Langastinos will do me just fine in their absence.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
So guys, is there anywhere to buy live spiny lobsters or langastinos locally? I'm a Maine/Maritimes lobster lover, not even sure if there's a difference between the spinies and langos. Just wondering if I can buy some to try.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
You can't get them fresh here, that I know of. Better to buy frozen seafood here at the lake that way you don't have to worry about how the fresh was transported, if you get my drift. I have seen them at Pacifico.
What about restaurants serving langostinos? I've never seen them listed at Tabarka. Maybe Lety's, I will ask. Anywhere else?

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
You make a good point about fresh vs frozen, but if they're live and kickin' that's fresh enough! Of course maybe they're not live. I've had frozen Australian lobster tails and they were pretty blah. I always figured that was from freezing, but maybe it was the product itself. I can wait till I go back in the spring, but it would be nice to know a source here.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
I tried frozen langostino tails once, in Chapala, but won‘t do that again anywhere. Live homerus americanus is the real thing; the only “lobster“.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
That's what I've always been afraid of, RVG, I know that's true.
I have had longostinos several times in restaurants and they were absolutely awesome! Al mojo de ajo ala parilla. To. Die. For.
That's the good news. The bad news is they were in the restaurants all along the Baja coast and in Zihua. I've never had much hope for here.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
From my Blog post
Thus, from February 16 until 15 September, restrict fishing activities in the productive zone of the Pacific Ocean known as El Tordillo, on the north coast of the Baja California Peninsula.
Also, from March 1 to September 30 capture the restriction apply in the Pacific Ocean region called Boca de Soledad, which includes areas of Bahia Asuncion, Punta Abreojos and San Juanico.
The third period of closure will run from May 1 to November 15 in the south of the peninsula, including fishing areas of San Lazaro, Magdalena Island, Island Thrush Margaritas and Cape to Cape San Lucas. Includes strip between the zero and 100 fathoms in the Gulf of California, along the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula.
Additionally, maintaining the temporary closure to catch spiny lobster, spiny lobster and lobster island, from 1 July to 30 October in the Gulf of California, along the coasts of Sonora and Sinaloa, as well as from Nayarit to Chiapas.

Re: Gossips New Years Lobster
So, female with eggs. BAD. Looks like they're endangered.
Now I'm confused. Spiney lobster is what we call lobster not langostino? Langostino is river shrimp what we call crawdads?
