NOTICE TO ALL LAKE CHAPALA RESIDENTS
November 18, 2015.
We have received important information from the Chapala Dept. of Ecologia: We need to alert all of Chula Vista Fracc to the presence of a venomous caterpillar-like insect in our midst. This furry insect is called La Oruga de Peluche…which is Spanish for “stuffed animal” and that is exactly what it appears to be. Yet, it is a most dangerous creatures, especially to children, because it has spines that secrete very strong venom. Youngsters may think it is a small stuffed animal, one they are eager to pick up. But one touch can be deadly.
If you were to just touch the creature, its venom can enter your system, causing your muscles to become paralyzed, affecting your brain and causing you to go into fatal respiratory arrest. Clearly this is very serious threat.
The Bomberos responded to a possible sighting of Oruga de Peluche in Chula Vista, in a garden on Del Monte. This is reason enough for us all to be on alert. You can get more information by searching the Latin name of this insect: Megalopyge opercularis.
If you or your gardener should see the insect pictured attached, DO NOT TOUCH it and immediately call the Department of Civil Protection and the Bomberos/Firefighters at the number below. They will come to your home and safely remove the insect.

Kind of looks like one of those "merkins" that everyone was raving about......jaja.

Just tell your gardener to watch out for a caterpillar that looks like Donald Trump's hair. Our is outside in the yard still giggling about it.

The local Guadalajara news this morning was reporting that there were some in Tonala,and advised people to call the Proteccion Civil... or you could just step on them.

That was my thought exactly. What is it that CP is going to do with them? What are the dimensions of this critter?

You are surprised???  The moderator is a big supporter of Donald Trump.....and acts just like him in his method for the solutions of the problems in his universe, which is a lot of hot air about what should and shouldn't be done for the public to breathe.

The "first aid" would be to use tape or tweezers to remove the spines that stick in the skin causing the problem. If the symptoms become more severe, visit your doctor.

I have not found a single fatality on record yet from this organism, just severe pain.

You can say that again.... and totally out of touch with reality. The man is scary and I'm so embarrassed that there are so many of my countryman agreeing with the asshole. The majority of folks are not going for it.... but how bizarre that there is ANYONE who would go along with him. It's almost like they made up their minds and nothing else is going to penetrate their iddy biddy brains. My mental picture of them is of them with hands over their ears yelling "LA LA LA LA ... I totally agree with Sparks and kipissippi. At first I though he was getting good ratings because he was a comedian, but when I discovered that he had a true following by those who want him to be President, I was terribly saddened, and for that matter glad that I am here south of the border

I believe we have one in our back yard hanging on a tree. I'll try to post a pic tomorrow as the batteries in my camera are dead. Any suggestions on what to do, if anything?

BTW, we live in Chapala Haciendas 2.

Isn't this what we referred to as an asp? They are not only londe but there are also black ones. Their sting can really ake you sick.

I agree with you Pete.  However, remember I grew up in Alabama during the administrations of the arrogant racists John Patterson (remember the [i]Phenix City [i]Story movie of the 50s) and the  unspeakably dreadful segregationistt George Wallace.
