Windows 10 Scam
Interesting thread on TOB mentions that if you get an email regarding Windows 10, it may be a scam that will toast your system, so don't open it. Supposedly, Microsoft doesn't send those emails.
Anyone here know anything about this?

Re: Windows 10 Scam
Microsoft installed a "message" in a regular update which pops up to advise you to order your Windows 10 update now.
As far as I am aware, Microsoft does not send emails to customers.
I am concerned that they may have misplaced the decimal point on the 10.

A complete lie! MS doesn't need to sink to the level of tawdry scams to toast your system.

If you read the TOB postings correctly, you would know that the point was: Microsoft doesn't send email messages to you and that this was a SCAM message sent by another entity.

It was a joke. I guess that wasn't clear. Next time I'll finish with an emoticon. Literacy, indeed.

Okay: ha ha ha je je je.
However, it is not unheard of for people to respond without reading the original post.
Then, there's the matter of Microsoft doing us no favors by issuing products that are followed by seemingly endless "fixes". No sainthood there. Uses the customers' time for the test kitchen.

Re: Windows 10 Scam
Before moving Lakeside I worked in IT. As a side project at my last place of employment, I was assigned a project of installing and setting-up MS Sharepoint (a glorified wiki). I never got it to run without throwing errors and I never found that Expert who could do any better. Nothing MS does surprises me. I use Linux at home.

To be fair I had my fair amount of hair pulling with HPUX/LINUX/UNIX/BSD/etc. Not for novice. Excellent for someone with too much spare time :-)

I would have agreed with you 10 years ago, maybe even 5, but a typical main stream Linux distribution, including but not limited to Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora is actually easier to install and maintain than is Windows; there's something to be said for not needling an anti-virus app, not having to worry about spyware and not needing to defrag, etc. The more light weight of these distros will give new life to your old XP box that won't support Windows 7 or 8 etc. These distros are decidedly NOT BSD or HPUX in terms of readily available free (sometimes you get what you pay for) online support and direction. And, of course, it's all free.

No argument here, except for the cost and that the OS X has much of the same privacy issues as does Windows 8 & 10. BTW, OS X is a derivative of BSD.

Have to disagree on a couple of points. The only place where Mac OSX has similar privacy issues to Windows is due to Flash programs, which run on both systems. And yes, OSX is a derivative of BSD, except that it has come a million miles from the original UNIX system, which is a 45 year old technology.

I'm taking privacy issues, not security. Windows 10 is coming under heavy criticism for its default policies.

Those are the initials for Berkeley San Diego, where the original UNIX program was developed.

...something you'll learn about by typing BSD into a search engine. You might try google.com.
