Real red snapper was fished out, so now anything that snaps at the hook gets called that. Or so I hear.

I have seen Red Snapper at Pacifico. That's the fish market in West Ajijic. They don't always have it so you may want to call ahead.

Costa Alegre near SuperLake had many yesterday.

With the exception of lake-caught tilapia and carp, red snapper (huachanango) is the most readily available fresh fish around here. Makes you wonder why this guy can't seem to find any.

Re: Anyplace local to find fresh red snapper?
It's always available at the Mercado in Zapopan, but I don't think it will be fresh, i.e., never been frozen, as they just don't transport commercially sold fish that way, anymore.
Just remember to ask for Huachinango. It is one of the more expensive fish from the Pacific ports nearby. To get the fish and have it never been frozen, you would probably have to go to one of the seacoast cities, and even then it would be a chore.
It's definitely not that hard to find, if you don't have to have it flopping alive (fresh).

I guess I'll have to make a greater effort to find some. It has been a bit disillusioning to order "red snapper" from menus and be served what was clearly not the real deal.
Much of my life was lived in California coastal cities where you could go to the places fishing boats docked and get flopping fresh fish, and I do miss that.

The abastos in Guadalajara has fresh fish. I have been there and seen them flopping around. In many cases they bring them live from the coast.

Pacifico Pescado has red snapper. Best to go in the morning as the trucks deliver early and good stuff sells out quickly.

Well there you go......frozen fish don't flop around.
They must be really tough, healthy fish to be still flopping around after a minimum 4 hour ride from the coast.

It is always available at Pacifico and it is very fresh Ask for huachinango since it is red you should no have much problems finding it. Right now the selection of fresh sea fish (something that is not farmed ) is pretty low but there is plenty of red snapper.

Why not just contact Pacifico Pescado and put in an order. Good people. I ordered fresh baja oysters from them - no problem. They can also supply different clam varieties. Go in, have a chat, and be a little patient. Product will have to clear and be forwarded through Guad. So, if you are planning a seafood "event" U'll have to coordinate. Bear in mind that they will and want to satisfy their weekend trade arriving for weekend festivities from Guad. Personally, I like to go in Wed. or Thurs. and see what"s going to be coming in. I always put a little bit in the fish counter tip jar before purchasing. U now have the fish guy's undivided attention. He is not very bilingual. Questions? go to the cashier. If the very nice lady who appears to be 30-40ish is there U'r in luck.
Re: Tabarka - the resto. His seafood is awesome for one main reason. He hi-grades. Super fresh. The trucks come up from Manzanillo, swing thru Joco and that SJC lakeside resto strip mall. Tabarka connects there, then off to Guad. They also do a good steak.
High quality protein is expensive. Always has been. Always will be. For good reason. Basa - the fish, is crap. Avoid. Farm raised crap. That cheap fish and chip deal - probably Basa.
Eat your great natural Mx veggies, etc.

I agree that farm raised fish is crap, especially salmon. I won't eat the stuff. Pacific and Costa Alegre always have good fresh fish. Personally, I prefer Costa Alegre, but they're both fine Pescaderias.

You mean that restaurants offering huachinango actually tried to serve you a different fish without telling you first? Boy, what a bummer!
It is such an unique fish that I don't know how they think they could get away with it. I always order the entero, so it's easy to ID the fish, so it's never happened to me, and I almost never order any other kind of fish.
I wish you felt like naming the restaurants that do that, as they deserve whatever retribution they get. Usually, I prefer Guicho or Cozumel in Chapala for huachinango, but I'm sure there are other seafood/lakeside restaurants in Chapala or Piedra Barrenada that offer genuine huachinango.
Basa, Tilapia,...no thanks

Re: Anyplace local to find fresh red snapper?
No need to place an order with Pacifico the only fish they have worth eating is huachinango right now. My husband is on a special diet and we eat a lot of fish , unfortunately this month it has been huachinango and huachinango. I do not buy farmed fish and right now all they have is farmed fish ..tilapia basa and of course fron salmon, the tuna is fro indonesia so if you want fresh it is huachinango, just wish something else was available.

Re: Anyplace local to find fresh red snapper?
The complaint is you can't find huachinango, it's been fished out and something is being substituted for it in restaurants and maybe they are calling other fish in the markets, huachinango. Yuck!!!

Re: Anyplace local to find fresh red snapper?
Well since there is no problem with supply of huachinango the restaurants are buying some other stuff and call it huachinango..retty simple.. God knows what they serve...

Huachinango. Great fish but to make it interesting you are going to have to up your culinary skills a little bit. Not so hard. That's what the internet and Google is all about.Dusted in seasoned flour with S&P and fried works for me. sqeeze some limon. Oh yah
