My step father is down with us and he is into rocks. Is there any good areas around here to find collectible rocks? Anyone here into this?

There are lots of rock shops in Magdalena where they mine for opals. It's not too far a drive - out toward Tequila north west of Guadalajara. Must be some rocks there also but don't know where to look. It's a one day trip there and back in a car.

Good to know this info. I have a friend coming from the states sometime this year that was inquiring about hunting for jewels.

For future reference and trips...
Zacatecas has many areas where you can find geodes just lying on the ground.
Or you can cheat and take a trip to Guanajuato where they sell full geodes for around 30 pesos at the mine and also crystals of various kinds.
Or you could take a trip to Bernal which is just outside of Queretaro...there are many opal mines there as well.
We love rocks too...we collected many different kinds throughout the state of Guanajuato and then used them to make a mural on a fountain wall. It was great fun and a wonderful focal point in our living room.

Every now and then there is a car or truck sitting at the intersection of Walmart and the libramiento and they display some beautiful geodes, rocks and crystals for sale. I have never stopped to see the prices but have wondered.

There are also some beautiful cut rocks and crystals for sale at shops in Magdalena and were not too expensive when I was there but it was many years ago.
