Re: 2 dead and shooting in Chapala
I saw a couple of state police trucks racing through La Floresta toward Chapala late this afternoon/early evening around 6:45pm or so. Maybe related, maybe not. After they passed me, an ambulance went screaming by in the opposite direction…...

Twitter says they were two brothers, executed, who had committed several robberies in the area. Breaks my heart, they don't look very old and it looks like they were left up in Tepehua area.

This is often what happens when people lost faith in the "justice" system under which they live.
Usually the view of the justice of the outcome of a dispute depends on which side you are on and the degree of personal loss you have suffered.
And Spencer: Careful when you cite biblical passages. A lot of people would not be happy if Exodus 35:2 were enforced.

Re: 2 dead and shooting in Chapala
I just heard about this incident from a good Mexican friend of mine who lives in that neighborhood and had experienced problems having to do with the two young men that were killed. His work pick up had its battery stolen by these two and the gas syphoned. My friend was losing sleep because he was trying to watch his truck so to prevent further damage. Neighbors were also experiencing problems having to do with these two.
My friend says it was the "Mafia" who cleaned out these two guys. Maybe it's not a good idea to steal from your neighbors.

Lots of dead bodies lately. Drunk drowned in a puddle in Riberas, man assassinated while eating at mercado in Joco, some sort of family problem and a young lady killed in Joco (related to a cop or two), 2 guys yesterday in Chapala killed

Enforced by who? The law was/is for Jews and many of them abide by it. That's their business and I leave them to it. It's not for me or most of us.

This is one (of several) reasons I am for the most part, a recluse.

I think if you're not a criminal you have nothing to fear.

Since you mentioned it, what are the other reasons? I agree with David and suspect you are missing many of life's simple pleasures by being a recluse.

Agree with you, David.
If I felt I had to live as a recluse due to fear of crime, I'd pack up and leave for somewhere else.

Yep, if I had any fear what so ever we would be out of here. Crazy way to live IMO......

On the other hand (and there's always an other hand): People new here may be very disconcerted at the idea of walls, spikes, barred windows and serious locks on their doors. Some are from places where they have wide picture windows, sliding patio doors and spacious lawns leading to the street. The culture shock hits them like a cement dump on their heads. Seeing all those security measures here tells them that there is something to very afraid of, if that level of defense is necessary. I've read posts by people who came from places where they don't lock their doors and leave the car keys in the ignition. Not like the place I came from, so that's hard for me to imagine.
Those coming from places where setting the security alarm before leaving the house is automatic, probably don't have the same level of uneasiness. Those alarm systems were common, even in the suburbs of Orange County, CA, where there was a fairly high burglary level. We know about the multiple locks on apartment doors in the big cities in the States.
I think that if someone lives in fear here, the best option is to live where they feel safer. Life is too short to feel like that.

Innocent people do get hurt or killed.

Actually, less often than in the USA. All in all, I think Mexico is safer from random crime against people.
I am not bothered by vigilante justice where the police are ineffective. Our neighborhood took care of itself, if necessary, and was very safe day or night.

Re: 2 dead and shooting in Chapala
I just rode home with my usual ajijic taxi driver who said the killings were sort of gang related. Not sure if his story is more or less accurate than others. But his story was the two "kids" were members of the local Narco gang. They were warned that to be a member they needed to follow house rules, and that included no ratones allowed (common house or petty robbery). Frankly, I was surprised to hear the local gangs have governance? Anyway, the kids apparently ignored the rules and after ignoring the warnings as well, were taken care of to be a warning to others. Seems a steep sentence for robbery, but that is frontier justice for you I guess, in the absence of any other....
