Should a wallet copy of the permanente card be notarised - have been told that a non notarised copy is illegal.

Non notarized is a simple copy where they can question whether it has been altered, a notarized copy will be accepted as the original for most tramites and things except by immigration and except to enter or leave the country.

FYI: On two occasions I came back to Mexico with a notarized copy of my permenante; the first time the office at the kiosk had to ask a senior officer and the second time, no problem.

The was a maybe a year or so ago. I didn't want to chance losing it.

I had a notiarized copy accepted by immigration at a checkpoint in Tijuana but they really shouldnt accept them for immigration purposes and you risk being entered as a tourist and losing your status.

I got my notarized copy today, the original now goes back with my passport until next time I travel, the notary's letter and copy stay in the car.

For US ID in mexico I carry a US passport card rather than a passport.  If I get robbed in mexico I go home and still have my US passport and Mexican Visa in a safe place.  Google US passport card available from LCS when consulate comes down. No need to carry passport when traveling in mexico with passport card available from US government. So why do I carry a US ID in mexico? To ID myself at consulate in emergency.

Make two copies of your Mexican visa the paper wears out after about 8 months of opening and closing it. Never been refused notarized visa copy as an ID in mexico.
