Need computer tech recommendation:
Have recently moved and need to have a computer tech for a "home tuneup". Need several laptops tuned up, wireless printer installed and internet connection upgraded. Located east of Vista del Lago (east of Chapala).

Thunder and lightning zapped a driver?? Do you not have your computer(s) behind a UPS?

Re: Need computer tech recommendation:
that ain't what a ups is for. even i know that. you are thinking of a voltage regulator. had one of those a coupla years ago and it got fried.i subsequently was told part of a file got corrupted probably by a power spike during the storm, and that was the problem, in any event. i sold the stupid ups to david just after we got here because of the bloody beeping. now that the rainy season is here we will merely unplug every thing at night..RickS wrote:Thunder and lightning zapped a driver?? That depends.. One thing is used for one and the other for another, however, both can corrupt files.Pedro wrote:that ain't what a ups is for. even i know that. you are thinking of a voltage regulator. had one of those a coupla years ago and it got fried.i subsequently was told part of a file got corrupted probably by a power spike during the storm, and that was the problem, in any event. i sold the stupid ups to david just after we got here because of the bloody beeping. now that the rainy season is here we will merely unplug every thing at night..RickS wrote:Thunder and lightning zapped a driver?? Re: Need computer tech recommendation:
I want to be clear about the use of a UPS in Mexico
First, very few homes in Mexico have proper grounding and polarization on plugs.
Second, a surge suppressor does nothing without a ground.
A voltage regulator (heavy smaller units with no battery) does not inherently protect against voltage spikes. Will not protect against spikes at all if not properly grounded. It is more for reducing the line voltage when high which is not a spike.
A UPS or Battery Back-up (is a heavy unit with a battery inside) will not protect against voltage spikes per se when not grounded, however it will switch the voltage over to battery when the line voltage goes above or below given thresholds. A battery back up is the only device that will protect you when power goes out momentarily which seems frequent in Mexico. Now at the time the power comes back there is frequently a major surge (or spike) in the line voltage. The battery back up will not switch you back to line voltage until the line voltage is normal.
The sudden power loss can result in data loss
The sudden return of power after the outage (and the voltage spike when you and your neighbor's refrigerators, air conditioning etc start working again), WILL kill hardware , especially power supplies. AN unprotected power supply on a computer in Mexico will die before 2 years. Put it on a UPS and easily get 5 years out of it.
To see if your power is grounded , check Steren or Walmart for powerline testers. It is just a plug with lights on it usually about 100 pesos

Re: Need computer tech recommendation:
Good surge protectors have a light to detect good ground on them. They also have a light to determine if your MOVs are OK as power strip on most designs will still work.
