But some observers such as Debra Lattanzi Shutika, a professor at George Mason University in Virginia who has studied expatriate migration to Mexico, question whether foreigners have fallen in love with their Mexican lifestyles and failed to grasp the seriousness of the drug war.

I find that rather patronizing from someone not here but living in Virginia.

Yes, interesting.... and it's the negatives that make it so. Apparently it still is important to be careful where you go.
Sonora seems peaceful to me. I have not seen armed guards at any of the banks I have used in San Carlos and Guaymas. Now that is a novelty. Lizzy

Fear will always sell more newspapers than any positive news.
She fails to mention that all has been fairly quiet for the last couple of months.

I thought the article represented many diverse points of view of expatriates who live here. One thing I found interesting is that I knew a couple who left the area and even bought some of their furniture before they left. They told me they left to be near their grand children in the north west. In the interview they said they left due to fears of rising violence and a policeman they knew who was murdered. It's interesting that the kept some of that information to themselves.
