Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
I tried to do a search of all the posts on veterinarian recommendations and didn't come up with any in Lakeside. I remember reading that there was one named Dr. Christine I think but can't find it, so posting for recommendations of a good one that is really knowledgeable and trustworthy. I did see there is a Dr. Luz in Guad. But I was hoping there is someone Lakeside. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thx!

Dra. Luz used to be at Lake Chapala, but is now in Guadalajara. It was a great loss when she had to leave. I really liked Dra. Berenice, in the shopping mall on the libramiento that has the OXXO and Pemex station, but only really dealt with her for regular care with a puppy/young dog. I no longer have my dog so we never went through anything complicated or involved. Many people will recommend others who are their favorites.

Lot's of vets here. What type of animals do you have? Drs. Ladron in San Antonio are the most popular and most expensive. For dogs and cats Dra. Berenice is VERY popular. She worked for Ladrons for 8 years before going on her own. Dr. Pepe is well thought of too. There are more. What EXACTLY are you looking for?

Re: Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
I have a boxer dog that I will be bringing with me to Lakeside and today I took her to my vet because I suspected she tore her ACL in her back hind leg. Which she did and she has to have surgery to repair it. It's costing me 2800. To have it done here in Oregon but I will need to have a good Orthopedic Vet for more follow up once we are there because it takes about 8 weeks total for recovery. So looking for a good Vet to pick up caring for her once we are there. She will be mostly recovered by the time we head out to make the drive down.

Dra. Berenice is your best choice IMHO because she was Ladron's surgeon for 8 years.

I would 2nd Dra Berenice. She and her assistant both speak decent English, she is very knowledgeable and my 3 dogs love her. I'm sure she can recommend an Ortho Vet but that will be in Guadalajara.

I can recommend Hospital Veterinario Arboledas in Guadalajara. Dr. Carlos Baron has been the Lakeside Spay & Neuter Center's, (the ranch), Vet for years. I use him for my own pets. It is a large hospital with all the latest technology and he has ten Vets working for him, some of whom are specialists in various fields. They are open 24/7, so are always there in an emergency. It is not a bad drive in, it takes the same amount of time for me to drive in as it did to drive to the vet up north. He is on Av Cruz del Sur 2909.

The hospital sounds suberb. However the OP was requesting a vet at Lakeside.

Re: Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
The OP followed up with another post saying she needed "a good Orthopedic Vet for more follow up once we are there." She has received several good recommendations for a primary vet here at Lakeside. Itsme offered an answer to her secondary question. I know several people who have used Dr. Baron and his clinic over the years for serious issues that were beyond the capabilities of our local vets. I have never had reason to use him but would not hesitate if the situation arose.

It's still Dra. Bere. She's done orth surgery on our pets and all the follow-up.

For you it is still Dra. Bere. Someone else has a different opinion.

Re: Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
I would only go to Dr. Baron at Clinica Arboledas in Guadalajara for an orthopedic problem. He has a full fledged 24 hour clinic. Does blood work in 20 min, x ray and all the latest equipment. I have been to all the local vets with some serious problems with my lab and no one could fix the difficult problems except Dr. Carlos Baron.

Re: Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
Thx everyone for the feedback! Sounds like Dr. Berenice is the right fit for me based on all the responses. The cost here for my dogs ACL surgery which is basically like knee replacement for us humans is costing me $2800. I wonder what it would cost down there? The vet doing it does about 500 of these surgeries a year! He's no Ortho specialists but he's definitely reputable for this type of repair surgery in this area in Oregon.

She'll be back later in May. Dras. Carla and Letty are there now and Dra. Bere consults by phone when needed.

Dra Berenice also does house calls. She is out on maternity leave at the moment but will be back soon. Meanwhile her tech is handling things and there is a substitute vet there whom I do not think speaks a lot of English so Carla thanslates.

Re: Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
Just for comparison, my dog had Luxating patella surgery here. This is a knee surgery....you can Google it. In the states is costs anywhere from $1700-3200. She also had a torn ligament in the same leg. Both were surgically repaired by Dr. Antonio Ladrone and the equivalent USD was $331 including all follow up visits and meds. It would certainly be a lot less here, but you may not want to wait. I would ask your vet.

Re: Seeking a great veterinarian in Lake Chapala
We were in a couple of days ago because our dog was attacked by some mean dogs and suffered three bite wounds. Dras. Carla and Letty took wonderful care of her. My Spanish is iffy but husband is pretty fluent so between Carla who speaks some English and Letty who speaks very little, we managed very well.
I'd go to Dr Baron for ortho surgery related stuff and the team at Dr. B's for everything else.
