I brought a US plated car when I moved to Mexico. Now it needs to go back north of the border. Will I have to have the title with the car to get back into the US with the car. I have reregistered the car in South Dakota. The plates are here, but the title will be a few more weeks. I need to take the car out now. Any advice?

You can take it out without showing the title. If you have your sticker removed at the border, when you come back in, you must have the title to re-import your car. Or you can leave Mexico without removing the sticker from you car but if you get in an accident and lose the windshield with the sticker, you are in trouble.

You may need the title to buy insurance.

Thank you for the replies. I do not intend to bring the car back into mexico. It is insured and will be for a month after leaving. It will be up to my son to get US insurance. The Mexican insurance will cover the car in the US.

Are you sure the Mexican insurance will cover liability?

You should stop, before crossing into the USA, and cancel your TIP.  At most major border crossings there is a kiosk you drive up to.  Less than 5 minutes later you are on your way.  Have your original TIP paperwork with you.

Where do you plan to cross?

At the CBP checkpoint they might ask you who owns the car or they might not ask.

Do you have your registration?  Even an expired one will work just in case.

Is your TIP current?
