Sling Dish Empty Sling Dish

Post by CHILLIN Tue Jan 06, 2015 3:50 pm

Are any members using Dish satellite and internet. This recent announcement offers an extremely attractive package for $20 (U.S.) per month. High speed internet is another $20.

http://www.cnet.com/news/dish-launches-20-sling-tv-streaming-video-service-with-channel-lineup-that-includes-espn-disney/

I know these are for the U.S., requiring a U.S. address and debit/credit card - but Dish Mexico seems to be saying that if you have a Dish account in the U.S., you can add Dish Latino for another $6 per month - but it is not clear if you receive U.S. content. I have good VPN for the U.S.A.

Here's another angle on this story - it looks like there will some big changes ahead for Mexico. Satellite connection for streaming content, internet and telephone. Kind of makes sense given the challenge of expanding cable based services in Mexico.

Chillin, I'm trying to find out more on this too.. I have a Dish Account in the US that is placed on 9 month pause.. $5 per month and I'm supposed to be able to utilize Dish Anywhere streaming services. I know the sling box is different than Dish Anywhere but interested in Sling as well.

Can you please provide any update.

Thanks !

I gave up waiting. Streaming is not possible for me until they up the internet speed. That will only happen when Telmex/Dish Mexico launches the new internet satellite units.

I will to the old fashioned ways - this company makes things simple and is economical too.

The .me is the country of Montenegro, in Eastern Europe, they all voted to become a country only a few years ago. International copyright laws have not caught up to them yet. Reminds me of that old comedy movie "The Mouse that Roared"!

The Dish anywhere account only allows you to stream some but not all of the channels you receive at home. Also I am told it can only be streamed to a US IP number, which may mean you would need to subscribe to a VPN service which makes it appear you are in the US when you are outside the country. Often when using a VPN service your speed drops so low that streaming live is not workable.

Here is another idea that will work with Dish or DirecTV shown below is how it is done with DirecTV.  Many folks who subscribe to DirecTV in the US, simply rent an extra receiver for $5.95 US per month, bring said receiver with them, connect it to a 2.4 meter dish with three LNBs, each LNB pointed to a different satellite, and they are able to get many but not all of the stations viewable up north.

Others who have relatives subscribing to DirecTV, DISH Etc; simply pay that relative to rent an extra receiver that they then take the receiver south with them to Mexico and hook it up.

But what an unsightly PITA that 9 foot dish is. Do those satellite services have that many more channels than Shaw?

Shaw is a wonderful alternative for Canadians because not only do you get your home town stations plus many national network stations, most from Canada a fewer from the USA. And guess what? Canada also rebroadcasts the network stations from several locations in the USA including Seattle, Spokane, and Detroit.

So it also has a lot of channels of interest to those from the US

And rather than a 2.4 meter (7.9 ft) dish, you get very strong signals on an elliptical dish that only measures 36.5 by 26.5 inches that Shaw calls the 75 E

If you are interested in technology, as we seem to be here, has anyone seen locally those linux based satellite receivers that share another's paid satellite dish subscription? All through the internet. Often called card sharing. Most popular in Asia, Middle East, and Europe.

Illegal, especially in the U.S. which has the toughest laws in the world for copyright infringement, and the deep pockets to keep up the fight.

Okay guys, thanks for the info..  I have read through the threads here in tech but still need an education.  My mom-in-law has Shaw and the programming would suit us well.  I was at brother-in-law house last night watching GB thrash my Seahawks.  He has Dish.MX .  I changed the language to english in audio settings of the receiver and now some of those Dish channels switched to english during programs but commercials in spanish.  Dang, he's paying 186 pesos per month for the standard package. No equipment charges.

Shaw seems the best for us but I don't know the procedure here to sign up. I have a US address still valid in WA but nothing in Canada. We do have lots of Canadian friends living there full time if that helps. I also see the Shaw receivers on eBay going pretty cheap.  DVR ability is important.

Also, has anyone played around with FTA sat systems here ?  I sure do see lots of PBS programming listed on those channels but never tried one.

Educate me.. please and Thank you !

Ask one of your Canadian friends if you can use their address. Americans who use Shaw here all have a "Canadian address."

I use Shaw and it works fine for me because I get my baseball fix from MLB off the internet. US sat companies have more and different kinds of sports. Canadian content laws stop some shows like Good Eats and others from showing in Canada so content is moderately different. HBO Canada might as well be from Mars compared to USA HBO. I like curling and rugby so I will stay with Shaw. So pick your poison but the Shaw dish is much smaller for sure.

A few years ago, using a 1.2 meter dish, I watched FTA channels (various locations) from a couple of US networks & a bunch of other stuff ex. retro channels with series like Route 66, ancient movies, two Spanish language networks. But they disappeared some time ago. I have an HD FTA receiver to sell. If you are interested, send me a PM.

Apparently Bell Mobile TV from Canada is being card shared internationally. I do not know the details on how they avoid international data and roaming charges.
Bell offers a nice HD satellite package too - including internet, but I believe the first box and dish must be installed by their own people (in Canada).

There are several businesses locally who offer Shaw to anyone. Somehow they have a bunch of Shaw accounts. I think it was a sweetheart deal from years past although who knows how long it will be before Shaw cracks down on it. Shaw recently stopped allowing legit account Canadians to take their receivers to their vacation properties outside of Canada. It is written as such in their terms and conditions. If caught they will shut you down. It is definitely preferable to get your own Canadian address and set up your own account. You will need to be able to pay it through either a Canadian bank account or Canadian credit card. They cannot accept payment from a foreign account. The tricky part when setting up a new account is convincing them that they don't need to send a technician to your address to check things out. The best way around this is to get an address in a remote part of Canada where they don't have technicians.
