US style, or Mexican style? The latter are easy to find, but plastic is taking over the world.

Either style would work, just not plastic.

Just north of Chapala is the thriving metropolis of Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos where there is a wonderful maceta factory. The link above (not mine) shows some pics. Why not make a day of it and have lunch at Los Cinco Potrillos?
You can simply drive in on the main drag and ask anyone "adonde se hacen las macetas?" and get good directions. I'd give them to you, but I'm direction challenged.

Re: Clay Flower Pots
we got ordinary unglazed clay pots[as used in canada] at that garden center at the bottom of the libriemento. they have all sizes and right now we are using the bases of a couple as ash trays because they are too small for anything that we have.
this is not what you want as it's 3 feet high and 2 strong men had trouble carrying it into our casa. we bought that there just recently and it holds a 10 foot fishtail palm.
trade ya the 2 pots with bases fer a coupla ash trays.

I tried the garden center at the bottom of the Libriemento, nothing there, tried the garden center behind Super Lake, a couple of extremely small ones - thats it, anything else clay was glazed or had a finish of some kind. Did not think it would be this difficult a thing to find.

Otrocanuck, There is a large pottery place in Ixtlauacan (sorry for spelling errors, we have a new spelling monitor on the board....please correct. ) Anyway, a large property paralleling the West side of the Liebramiento.
I was there last year, and they will custom paint as well. Sorry I can't be more specific......
HELP ANYONE?

There is a nursery just north of the Ajijic Clinic. It's on the west side. They have lots of different sizes of pots.

I, too, have had difficulty finding unpainted pots, and have made many trips to Tonola. Am eager to check out the factory in Ixthualacan.

Re: Clay Flower Pots
The link to the one in Ixthualacan shows almost exclusively the Mexican style of clay pots, my first choice was the American style. I do not have a car so was hoping for somewhere close by.

Ya got me Otro.........1st time anyone mentioned "American Style Clay Pots and distance limitation. There are many members of the board that have pick-ups or Vans. You could bus up there....only a couple clicks from Chapala Haciendas, and they would make and paint to your specs.
Good Luck.

Re: Clay Flower Pots
that is pretty much what I am looking for, the type you find most everywhere north of the border, classic is a good description. I want to make one of the clay flower pot heaters which was described on this board some time ago, and need that style and different sizes of them to fit into one another. The Mexican style with the narrower tops will not allow them to fit within one another.

Re: Clay Flower Pots
Last year I used a loaf pan, 4 candles and a clay roof tile. Put the candles in the loaf pan and lay the clay roof tile on top. Works pretty good.
This year I bought a propane heater. Works 1000 times better and quicker......jajaja.

Re: Clay Flower Pots
The gas cylinder costs under 150 pesos. Last year I used half of one. I would have spent more than that on candles, probably still been cold--and constantly worried about my dog or cats knocking the candle thing over. Also, have you priced good candles down here? (The cheap ones burn faster and create sooty smoke.)
