Propane tanks of various sizes are sold at most hardware stores. They generally cost less in places other than Ajijic; like many other things.

I bought one yesterday for 555 pesos and had it filled for 135 pesos.

Remember Mexican propane tanks have no OPD (overfill protection device) valve so don't overfill tanks especially if you bring a partially filled tank to be topped off! Your safety is your own problem without an OPD valve.
