JOLOPO decimated/wiped out the life savings of millions of Mexicans with his high double digit, almost triple digit (Argentina style) inflation rates. When they sought refuge in USD and USD accounts he suspended the exhange/ownership of same in the name of "La Patria". Then he arbitrarily forced the conversion of USD accounts, in the recently nationalized/government owned banks, to pesos at the rate of 50 centavos for each peso of value for said accounts.
How many remember the "triple zeros" he left us with.
It was highway robbery at it's best...could only have been worse if someone had thrown down on you with a gun.
Slainte, you make a good case and you actually lived here through it,I didn't,at least Lopez Portillo is dead, while many believe that Salinas is EPN's puppet master.

¡De acuerdo! Let's hope the puppet outlives the master...or learns to talk on his own.

PS add on...Just to say that CSG was a better president than anyone else before him, shows what a dismal recent history we have had. I guess time has jaded my thinking into....Thank God, there is only one direction from "as low as you can get".
So  Very Happy and have another  Beer

slainte is fuzzy on a few details. JLP, like De la Madrid was basically a caretaker of the economic policy of Echevarria. Each put there own little touch to the disaster but the 3 were basicslly screw ups of the first order.

The triple digit inflation belonged to De la Madirid as did the 3 zeros on the peso. Salinas "stabilized" the peso, made credit easily available and led the citizens to believe they had overcome the other 3 bozos disastrous policies. But he did everything with smoke and mirrors and when the shit hit the fan in December of 1994, people didn't just lose their savings. They lost their homes, cars, jobs, had to take kids out of better schools etc.

Lived, worked and raised a family through it.

Puppets never do anything on their own. They may change puppeteers but they don'y do anything alone.

You're right Ernie, Eche was the first of the triumvirate, but we didn't start feeling the pain until JLP. De la Madrid was already painted into a corner and had no wherewithall to get out, either financially, mentally, or any other means. He just happened to be standing when the music stopped, looking for a chair. But take your pick looking for the worst villain.

It's knowledgeable posts like slainte' s and ernie's by people who actually know what they're talking about when it comes to Mexico that makes this forum an interesting  and informative read sometimes,IMO
