The lake is rising

Don't forget that most of the lake is bounded by farmland. The chemical runoff from fertilizers is of great concern to the health of the lake.

I was responding to your post and the one talking about how "big" the oceans are and hence have assimilative capacity. Most people do not understand the difference between raw sewage and sewage that has received primary treatment. The oceans don't assimilate solids well, they do very well with the dissolved organic matter that remains after primary treatment.

And neither are the same as this odious practice of baling solid wastes and dumping them in the ocean which is one of the sources of those floating plastics.

When I went fishing off of Manzanillo last time, we passed through an area of floating garbage/plastic. You are absolutely right that there is a big problem here.

I see floating plastics on the lake, probably most from litter along the shores. At this time of year, all the trash on the streets gets washed into the lake as well.

I was a licensed sanitary engineer for decades. I wouldn't swim in this lake. To each his own.

We are way behind in rainfall for August. Let's hope last night was a return to wetter conditions and not just an isolated event.

Went sailing today. Lots of lirio afloat. Got out even with Scorpion Island and there were small islands of it. Before that, it was small (2ft diameter and smaller) bunches from Riberas out.

Looked at the Rio Lerma last evening in Ocotlan.  While it used to be packed with the noxious plant noted, it is low again with half of it gone.  Point of interest is that the water level is low.

I thought the Rio Lerma entered the Lake through La Barca....didn't know it even got close to Ocotlan.
The Rio Santiago sources at Ocotlan, could that have been what you were seeing. If so, it's always low, as very little water, if any, is/has/will be leaving the Lake (and it's always full of lirio, more like a swamp).

Thanks for the correction. There was a flood recently in Ocotlan and the runoff was to go into the river. By now, the lirio is half of what it was previously and there is more mud than water.
