In all probability, Cozumel uses adulterated liquor that doesn't even qualify as tequila? Free isn't necessarily the best! In fact, not even close.

Those restaurants' margarita's are not horrible but certainly not the best. While I don't usually drink margarita's, I have had some pretty good ones at Ives Restaurant.

The best margarita is a Paloma.

We were recently in a steakhouse in Taos, New Mexico and their signature margarita was quite similar to a Paloma:
Grapefruit juice, lime juice, elderflower liqueur, tequila, agave nectar

I must say that their variation using a half Pink Grapefruit with the juice pressed directly into the glass was a fine drink!

after you've had a few and you get glassy eyed, who cares-SNORK! the molcajetes are superb, enough for 2 with leftovers and about $200 pesos +/-.

I can verify that one has to work very hard to find a decent margarita in the State of New Mexico. After 10 years here, we have found only two establishments capable of holding a candle to the everyday variety found in Mexico. Since we haven't spent all that much time out at the lake as of late, I have no specific opinions of any out there except for my semi negative post about the Cozumel margaritas. I do highly recommend the margaritas at the El Patio and Hotel Quinta Don Jose in Tlaquepaque.

For some, what a drink tastes like really does not matter. They are looking for the effect and many of those want to achieve the desired result as cheaply as possible.
For others, it is about the experience, part of which is what the drink tastes like.
Luckily for all of us, there are places to do both around here -- whichever way we are feeling at the time.

the 2 restaurants i mentioned don't serve tongue 'n cheek but the food is quite tasty. as well as the free margaritas you can choose free white wine.

Well I am with Chinagringo on this one. Although I don't like margaritas if Charlie at Quinta Don Jose in Tlaquepaque is making them I could stay all afternoon. His are not sweet.

I agree if you are talking about Yves restaurant. Try the Mojito also.

I am interested in taste...fresh squeezed citrus, decent tequila, balance of sweet/tart. The best we've had ever were at Las Palmas in Matehuala.

After seeing Anthony Bordain on his new show on CNN go to Brazil and drink Caipirinhas on the beach I have been curious. So yesterday at Walmart I see a bottle of Cachaca Ypioca Crystal or Sugar cane liguor with a muddler and a container to muddle everything. Can't wait for a hot day to try one! Anybody make Margaritas with Mezcal? It does taste a little bit different from Tequila.
