Hard drive failing, XP operating system. . .time to rebuild the desktop. All components good to go, just the HD needs to be replaced. I think.

Any recommendations as to who to do it? Any recommendations as to which post XP operating system to have installed?

TIA

You might have a techie check to see if your HP with XP has a sticker with a VISTA key. We are going through a crisis with two XP computers and one WIN 7 computer were all compromised by an attack by the Anonymous group on the City of Albuquerque's network. One Dell XP computer didn't have the VISTA key but the HP did. I am probably wrong but I am under the impression that it is appropriate to upgrade an XP machine to VISTA but not beyond?

Frankly, I would buy a new computer versus ever re-building an old one. By the time you buy a hard drive, updated motherboard, RAM, new power supply, etc. etc. you can buy a brand new one with all the latest goodies.

Windows 7 may not have drivers for a bunch of old hardware. I can' get my Lexmark printers to work with it. Rob/Rod (Laguna Net) built a new system for me when I was in Joco. 6k pesos included a flat screen and English everything

I remember, Sparks, but Rod doesn't have the shop anymore and is working out of his house now. Don't think he's so into hardware stuff anymore, probably concentrating on his sites now. Thanks.

About two years ago, I had Rueben at Computerland build me a new desktop. Before recommending components he asked me what I used my computer for and what I might like to do with a new one. I did not want a whole lot of bells and whistles I would never use and he helped me decide what I should spend my money on. The cost was about 5,000p total--a little under 400 u.s.
