We are thinking of going there for a few days for a change of scenery/pace.
Just have to get away from the fast lane in Ajijic.
Any suggestions/recommendations regarding accommodations, restaurants, best locations etc.

The Pink Posada not elegant but a nice stay and it includes breakfast:

We stayed on the more south end of the beach near the ship entrance to the harbor. Watching the ships go in and out was fascinating but the beach itself was so steep that we didn't spend much time on it. To go body surfing, we went to the large public beach area on the north end of Santiago.

We greatly prefer La Manzanilla for the small beach town atmosphere and the very excellent beach there.

Or La Manzanilla instead of Manzanillo. Or Barra/Melaque.

Probably tongue in cheek .... but Manzanillo is the fast lane compared. More relaxing and you can get right on good beaches in Melaque or Barra

Check with Expedia, Travelocity or Hotwire for hotels in any of those locations.

The Pink Posada is, alas, like a lot of old folks: things that used to work, don't.  Like air conditioning in some units; built-in ancient mold in some showers; no latches on bathroom doors.  It's a trip to the sixties.

Breakfast includes the palest eggs you'll see in Mexico, along with Bimbo toast. "Ham" means thin luncheon meat.
The air is still laden with toxic fumes from the power plant.

The good news:  It's cheap, and right on the beach... but I wouldn't recommend swimming.  I'd keep heading North for a better experience in Manzanillo or Melaque. Thumbs up

Barceló Karmina Palace at the entrance of Las Hadas is where we usually stay. Very good all inclusive, if that's your thing, or like me, with wall to wall family and kids.....unlimited free ice cream....every kid's dream come true.
I'll tell you more about it at lunch.

Pretty hot and humid at the beach lately. You might prefer Mazamitla or Tapala. Almost boringly quiet.

Gringal, there was no toxic fumes from the power plant when we were down there in February. The plant is now burning natural gas. The air was so much cleaner than before.

Unless they started burning oil again, this problem should be gone.

It wasn't gone when we were there recently.  It's just less visible, sorry to say.  Plus, the seaport creates it's own pollution so close to the Pink Palace.

I'd second the recommendation for Karmina Palace: Bless them, they even have elevators for those with knee problems, and the mass food delivery isn't bad at all.  The restaurant out on the rocks is very pleasant in the evening, and the rooms are very comfy.

Then there's always the Hotel Maria Cristina in Santiago central. Very clean and friendly. You may have to ask for AIR. Fun local area. Was 210 pesos a night in 2007

We are at the Pink Posada right now. Yes, it is a little run down, but it is very quiet here. There are maybe two other guests besides us. The past two days I have had the pool to myself. Breakfast has been great. Delicious huevos mexicana, nice fruit plate, pancakes, bacon. Other eating recommendations are El Vecaro, pricey, but great steaks. Friends recommended Tacos Son Risas. We have seen some pollution in the distance, but it hasn't reached the beach area. I have walked the beach every morning with no problem.

We have had a Red Tide for about a week here on the Coast. It stretches from Manzanillo north past Barra toward PV.

Seems that it is just starting to clear up. Sure did stink all the past week.

On Playa Miramar I can see yellow/green crud, which is the Red Tide breaking down.

I am staying out of the ocean for a few days.

If it gets too hot/humid on the coast...Tapalpa is a great choice.
