Leave it up to technology to attempt to make life easier.  Garmin has introduced HUD+ (Head-Up Display) to display turn by turn instructions from your Smartphone GPS up onto your windshield using Bluetooth:

Might be a viable work around for the new Jalisco restriction on GPS units?

That's nice.. but my smartphone when using Google maps or waze works perfect! Waze in  particular estimates ETA and shows wrecks, roadwork and even let's me know where cops are, the hidden ones and visible ones..

I suggest you give "waze" a try out on your next road trip!  FYI Google bought them out last year.

Just go to your app store and download to your smartphone.  It's free.. I use both of them waze and Google maps. I wish I could find something negative to say about them, but I cant!!!

Since I have both apps that you mention, I understand what your point is. However, you may have missed the point that this unit may improve your experience by augmenting some of the shortcomings of using a smartphone as a GPS - smaller screen and being able to position it in such a way that it is easier to use. I recently was discussing the GPS ban in Jalisco with a Guadalajara resident who hadn't heard a thing about it. He uses his smartphone and props it up in the speedometer well on his dash. With this unit, the smartphone can be set most anywhere but your directions are projected onto the windshield where it is easier to see them.

All that said, I believe that a smartphone is still a phone with some added features and still prefer a dedicated GPS unit. YMMV!

Good point about the audio but there are oddballs like myself who drive visually and prefer seeing the map or the written turn by turn instructions. In fact, most of the time I mute our GPS because I cannot handle the slaughtering of Mexican road names and the extra chatter generated when street names change at a traffic circle or on occasion between blocks.

While I consider myself to be quite good at finding our way, I am absolutely horrible at giving directions because I don't pay attention to street names and drive by visual landmarks that I only know when I see them.
