Roku vs G Box Midnight Mx2

I'm considering Roku or G Box Midnight Mx2 as a replacement for satellite TV. I would like opinions on both from those who have them.

I have read the pros and cons on both on the net. Now I would like to know your experience using either one.

I think no one is commenting because the op asked for opinions from those who have one of the two. I have an opinion but I don't actually have one of the two devices. It would also be helpful if the op would say what exactly they would be using the device for (or at least its primary function).

I will be using it for TV and streaming movies. I'm fed up with satellite companies. I will take any opinion on the subject whether you have used either one of them or not.

I need to make a decision by next week so a friend can bring it to me.

We are currently using two different alternatives: Logitech Google TV box and Chromecast

To be candid, I haven't taken the time to figure out all of the possible advantages of either. The Google TV box was discontinued within about 6 months of purchase but still works just fine. We primarily use it to stream movies from Amazon Prime. With Chromecast, I need to get back to it and figure out just what it can accomplish.

We too are fed up with the constantly rising costs of satellite TV and will be dropping the service as soon as I find a viable alternative. As I see it, the problem lies with too many options and the technology seems to be "succeed or die". The challenge is picking one that will be here to stay.

I have an "ezcast" dongel on one TV, recently picked up a "mini PC TV cloud stick" for another (this uses the same android OS as the gbox) and I use an HD antenna for local channels. I have a media server that has over 3tb of movies and I use Netflix for online content. Of the two you asked about, I would go with the gbox. I believe it would have the same networking capabilities as my mini pc , along with advertised Netflix support. I think any device wanting to break into this market should allow streaming of personal content along with support for all of the major online providers.

Oh and I should add, I ruled out the Roku some time ago, for my needs.

Streaming requires at least 2 meg download speeds, more for HD, and a VPN router to mask your ip address to get the good channels.

We have used ROKU here for 8 months.  You do not have to have a VPN to mask your IP.   We used USTVnow  for about 3 months to get 20 channels of live streamed TV  on ROKU: national channels like USA, TNT, ESPN,  plus the networks (ABC, CBS, NBC) out of Pennsylvania.

ROKU  does  work very well with 2 Meg of download speed.  

Live TV on ROKU does require stable internet for smooth viewing.   If you have little ½ second or momentary drop-outs,  it sometimes causes the ROKU to lose its place and go into a reload mode when watching live TV,  but if you are streaming a movie or pre-recorded TV show (like Breaking Bad or House of Cards) even with little drop outs,  ROKU works fine.

For us,  I would get a Mexican service like "nano" for about $300 pesos a month to get 40-50 channels of live streamed TV, including lots of PPV sports, Canadian channels, local/networks from Boston, NYC, and Seattle,  - 3 time zones - plus 228 new release movies in English and another 130 recent movies in english, plus old movies, yada, yada, yada, and a bunch of pre-recorded TV series like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, etc.

Again, no VPN needed for these options, and the picture quality is very good on  almost everything - even without HD.   In addition to HDMI outputs, the upper model ROKU boxes also have a 3.5 mm output that lets you dump the standard yellow-red-white RCA jack signals   into an RF convertor,  and send your ROKU to other TVs in the house over standard 75 ohm TV  cables -   allowing you to watch your Roku in other rooms.

We personally use ROKU in combination with Sling-Box - (a $5 a month DirecTV cost through our kids back in the USA), and get 3 time zones of football, SNL, etc.   all through the internet, with NO VPN, to allow us to go to bed when we like.

If you choose ROKU,  don't get the cheaper models for use in Mexico.

If you want to watch 480 resolution, with no surround sound go ahead. Netflix U.S.A. super HD requires 5 to 7 download speeds, and a VPN connection. Likewise BBS, CBC, ITV and Hulu Plus

We love our roku.. have three of them and use a vpn.
