I have been told there will be a meeting on the Malecon @ 5 to discuss what, if anything, can be done to save it. Please come.

Yeah really...of all the illegal structures built on federal land around the lake why this one? At least it's something the public can use.

I also wonder how come a public space like the San Antonio pier will be demolished while that ugly thing at the Ajijic pier remains .

The Tequila Republic is under a 99 year Federal Zone lease so only about 70 years to go. In which case I would like to see somebody fix it up and get a nice restaurant/night club going in there.

Do you think the Tequila Republic is structurally sound? Everytime I go by it I wonder if it could handle much weight.

It actually still looks pretty sound from underneath. It seems to be a steel frame all around. Some wooden flooring may need to be replaced. I am always looking at it because I think it has great potential for a well managed restaurant/bar and small retail shop.

There has to be a very good reason why nobody has stepped up to the plate re the Ajijic pier location. Just think of the graft that you would have to pay. The major beer brewers have the heft and they haven't touched it. That speaks. We'll all get to watch it slowly fade away, crumble, etc.

San Antonio Malecon Empty lease laws

FYI, I used to own a home on leased land. Before I bought the "right to rent" I studied up on Mexico lease laws. There is no such thing as a legal 99 year lease. Land leases are limited to to a max 10 years by federal law. Commercial lease can only run for 15 years. They can be perpetually renewed if there is agreement between landlord and tenant.

I guess you will have to explain that to the guy that holds the lease and the Federal judge that signed it 20+ years ago. I understand, from someone who was looking at doing something there, that it can be sub-leased but the guy apparently wants way too much money. I'll see if I can find out any more details about it.

Rumor has it that it will reopen soon.  Source is a good one that I can't name, sorry.  Agree with Pedro about the previous version, drinks good, view fantastic, food sucked. We enjoyed the company too.

This place could be a major attraction if run right.  We used to love to take our visitors there for a before dinner drink and enjoying the setting sun over the lake.  Frankly, we liked the funkiness of it.  Reminded me of some of the old beach dives in California before the government regulated them out of existence.

This business in San Antonio really puzzles me.  I can't imagine why the objection to it by that agency is so strong that they want to tear down a nice public attraction.  I'm wondering if this is caught in the middle between some sort of political pissing match.
