DVD, hd, wifi, Blu Ray, 3D, connection problems
I just bought/ installed a Samsung 5700,, only to discover there is no way to connect the unit to my amp for surround sound.
Has anyone purchased a DVD player recently that connects, easily to a surround sound system?
TIA

I have a Samsung D5700 which has an optical output for connection to a surround sound system.

Another name for optical output is Toslink. It is a plastic fiber optic cable designed originally for Telephone use. Pretty much all surround sound systems should have a digital optical/Toslink input socket. It is the most used digital standard. Others are a metal cable using RCA jacks and in the past a glass fiber optic cable some AT&T standard. You have no digital in on your receiver or all in one surround box?

Since the 5700 has no RCA Jacks, and no audio out, other than the optical output, it appears as though one must purchase a surround sound system that has the optical input, correct?

That would be correct. Most newer tv's also have an optical out port.

Thanks Zenwoodle, The weak point appears to be my amp. I have a 60 inch Sharp, thanks to zed for input, have 3d, wifi, hd, plus plus plus, the Samsung 5700 works great, the TV works thru the amp, a Yamaha.

I'm guessing your
TV has HDMI ..IN and OUT..how many?
Your D5700 does have HDMI, OUT
But does your Receiver/amp have HDMI?
Which Yamaha do you have?

TV 4 HDMI, 5700 correct, That's the problem Arbon, Yamaha has none, and no coax audio in or out, RCA jacks.

I have a Yamaha back at the farm in Ontario, it has 2 optical inputs. Which Yamaha do you have?
Down here I just use a Panasonic sound bar for the TV and Blue-ray.

Having talked to Jim on the phone regarding his problems, I think he is attempting to merge "old technology" with "new"? While I think an AV specialist might be able to come up with a solution, apparently options are somewhat limited in Casa Grande. Hell, they are still trying to figure out when the next Pony Express rider will be passing through!

Maybe Jim is expecting to get surround sound from a 2 channel stereo.

Arbon, I wouldn't know 2 channel from 4 channel. I just ASSUMED that since my TV was working with Surround Sound the DVD player would too.
The Receiver amp is a Yamaha model HTR 5730. DTS Dolby.
Thanks again, Jim W

Re: DVD, hd, wifi, Blu Ray, 3D, connection problems
1) I would start with the Blue Ray player .
Connect Samsung BD-D5700 to TV with HDMI
2) Then connect TV to Yamaha HTR 5730 (at the far left on the back of receiver there are 3 digital audio inlets
1 coaxial and 2 optical) chose the middle one DTV and use an optical cable.
3) connect 1 speaker to the Yamaha marked CENTER.
4) turn on TV and turn down volume too 0 zero.
5) turn on Yamaha and find out if you can hear the TV, use the Yamaha volume control.
6) then try a disk in the blue ray, I think the Samsung plays CD. good luck.

Jim what is your Sharp TV model number ...
Because which HDMI input and output you use is important.

Drift!
Be careful buying newer cheap TVs as they don't have RCA audio output jacks anymore. They only have optical digital out which won't connect to an old receiver for example. I know three people who wanted to hook up the sound from these new TVs to there old Pioneer two channel receiver for example and could not. Always looks at inputs and outputs on electronics before buying. I admit I can't understand why they don't have Analog RCA sound jacks anymore. I use these jacks all the time.

I know...my point is check your cable needs before you buy a TV or a device that plugs intoJim W wrote:Zed the TV has plenty of RCA jacks.....the problem was the DVD didn't have any.
TVs. Many new cheap TVs have no analog output RCA jacks just optical digital output. Try
to find component outputs on DVD players these days is difficult if not impossible. Hollywood
hates any kind of analog device because they can't stop you from copying. HDMI they can
for example. I guess don't buy any TV without output RCA jacks if you want to plug it into
a old pre-digital era receiver which is many of us still use.
