I think they all have to be on the same transformer as the signal will not go through a transformer but I doubt if this is the problem
as why would you be on two different transformers on one property.

Could be the problem if you have multiple phases in your casa. Many of the houses in the area where I am have 3 phase main panels. The power line modems might have a difficult time getting a signal all the way back to/from the transformer. In the setup we have, the transformer has to be at least 100 mtrs. away. Maybe they all need to be on the same phase (leg) of the panel??

Instructions say same phase. I guess same circuit or breaker would be even better.

Oh I didn't know they need to be on same phase. Ahhhh that explains a lot of my failures with such technology.

What are you trying to accomplish? You have DSL? You want to use your laptop on different floors of your home? How far is your modem from the Laptop?

Jim,

I am trying to extend the range of my Infinitum connection. As the previous thread says, it does not like cement and rebar. I was hoping a signal booster would help. I have connected several D-Links to see if that helps. It does not.

I have a WiFi Range Extender for sale if that is any help to you. It is an Amped Wireless SR10000 600mW 802.11 b/g/n which is still "New In Box". I bought it about a year ago at Tiger Direct and brought it down for the casa. Set it up and it worked great but we decided to hard wire instead to solve our problem. PM me if interested.

As suggested early on in this thread the best way to overcome a weak signal is to "train together" several wireless modems with long stretches of Cat 5 cable. Signal boosters won't get past the steel and concrete. I have three wireless modems on my property.

Well CB you can bring down larger antenna if you have removable antenna. I punch through Adobe metal and brick with these larger antenna. Asus makes the ones I use and they are labeled for 9db gain. I use three of them. It allowed me to get rid of all the boosters and stuff.
I actually put the cable modem and wifi on my back porch and it punches to the front of the house with three bars and goes down to the casita under my house with four bars. Sometimes simpler is better. Antenna can't break or have a need to be configured is my theory. The larger
antennas give one at least a bar and a half more signal as a generalization. I compared my signal to the Telmex wifi modem that is also in my house as backup for Telecable modem.

Not that I have seen at least in Retail.

I bought mine at Fry's Electronics in Seattle. Make sure you have the screw on type of antenna not the snap on.

When shopping for antennas, you will need to know a few things.

1) Gain (expressed as db or "decibels)
2) Type of connector needed for your repeater/modem.booster (whatever you are using)
3) Directional or Omni-directional.

Directional is as it says - the pattern from the antenna is primarily in one direction from the antenna (sort of like aiming). Omni-directional give you a pattern that is almost equal distance in a circle around the antenna. So it depends on your situation which type of antenna to get. Directional works best with an 802.11g signal. Do not use a directional antenna for 802.11n signals due to the multipath nature of the technology, use an Omni-directional for that application.

One more spec you forgot. What band are they designed for. Some are multi band and some are single band. The Asus are single band. They work on all bands but best on band it is designed for. Good info. If you ever met an Antenna Engineer he/she would tell you its all magic anyway. Play with this stuff till it works is my best suggestion for punching through walls.

If anyone needs to drive a WiFi connection a long distance, I also have a "point-to-point" package I can sell you that I no longer need. It will drive the signals up to 3 km. "line-of-sight" (LOS) using some hi-gain directional antennas. It consists of 2x Linksys WAP54G 802.11g repeaters, 2.4 gHz Trendnet 14dbi antennas and the special coax adapters to connect the antenna (female "N" type) to the antenna ports on the Linksys. The antennas come with a wall mount so can be placed on the top of a roof or pole and "aimed" at the other antenna which could be on another casa or somewhere else. I used to use it NOB to drive a WiFi connection between my house and a workshop that was about 300 mtrs. away and it worked well.
