Oh Southbound thank you so much. What a treat. He is a treat. Did he receive an "Order of Canada". sure hope so. Now, if someone could weigh in with a little Gordy Lightfoot. I don't know how to do this stuff. My wife is still convulsing with laughter. She's a born and bread Sudburian (sic) franco ontarian. I think Stompin Tom was our first rapper. Did you notice he has this little "stompin plate" under his feet ? He keeps his own time.

OH, our Canada Day menu was comprised of triple A Alberta rib eyes, on the bone, with baked spud and a salad from the garden. Ice cream. Too much wine. Tomorrow, for the hordes we're subing fresh sockeye and bring your own dead mammal.

John and others.... Here are a couple of videos that are my favourites:

The first is Tom Brokaw (a fellow Canadian) Tom Brokaw Explains Canada To Americans during the 2010 Olympics.

The second is Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans!" Sorry about the poor quality of the video... but you'll get the idea.

Oh... You don't have to rename our country. Were already the country ABOVE the U.S.A.

Now.... before this starts the usual Canadian bashing... I posted this with tongue in cheek.

Happy Independence Day !

To answer the question, went to a great party at the neighbor's across the street. Lots of Canadians there. A blast!

First, thanks, Ferret for your post!

I learned recently that the Canadian Government (probably through the Centennial Commission run by Dan Akroyd's father) commissioned Lightfoot to write a song for the 1967 Centennial and this was it. Probably one of the few times the government actually got good value for their money!

And, Oatsie, good post as well but, in the interests of accuracy, Tom Brokaw was not a Canadian-- he's from one of the Dakota's, which makes him almost a Canadian. Peter Jennings, of course, was Canadian.

---Oh, and to answer John's question, we had our annual block party. Lots of fun!

I hope everyone had a very Happy Canada Day down there!

Bob

What part of Ontario are you from?

Hi, John...

To split a hair, I'm actually "from" Alberta (almost a North Dakotan!) but am now retired near Ottawa. Not always an easy situation to be in, but it is where my wife is from! Very Happy

The thing I always liked about Gordy was you could understand every word he sang! Another great Canadian vocalist is KD Lang, possible the best "torch" singer around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6Ye9G3HEsQ

Agreed! Love her song "Constant Craving" and she is the only one able to sing "Crying" by Roy Orbison with any kind of credibility.
Don't forget Diana Krall too for "torchy".
Joni Mitchell, Murray McLachlan, Anne Murray, Neil Young, Paul Anka (who went to school with my hubby in Oughterwa) and his find Michael Buble.
There's many more.

Spent the day actually trying to get to Canada. After a delay of over 3 hrs. in Cleveland due to the fast moving storm cells whipping through, landed in T.O. at around 11PM. Saw some nice fireworks from the plane over SWO.
