Palm tree disease Empty Palm tree disease

Post by doc holiday Tue Mar 20, 2018 11:28 am

I received this e mail .....is it fake or real. I do have several palm trees but is the disease and the cure a hoax. Anybody else get this? My spam filter is good and did not catch this

There is a deadly disease all over America, it is a beetle that eats up the core of the date palm.
I notice you have a gorgeous date palm in your garden.
Is very important that you prevent and save your palm.
I can provide with a contact number if you have not yet treated your palm.
Saludos afectuosos.

The palm beetle is definitely in this area and is a threat to many types of palms. Search this forum for more information and also Google. I don't know if there are viable remedies and can't advise you on the legitimacy of the email you received.

"I notice you have a gorgeous date palm in your garden." is the one that suggests it's SPAM, though the disease is real. I'd look elsewhere for information about the symptoms and the cure.

It's a beetle and has killed many palms in Chapala and Chapala Haciendas by eating the heart out of the palm. Don't know the remedy.

THe remedy is killing the beetle early, I would think but many palms are very tall so it would be very expensive. O am sorry I did not know about the beetle and it was too late when I found out. I would think robert tree service could advise if the tree can be saved or not..

My date palm is very near the stret....easily visible. No sign of disease. Would need bomberos or helicopter to treat it .

From what I have read, treatment is questionable. I did not reply to the message....just more problems

I posted a while ago that I had my tree guy spray for beetles as a prophylactic measure. So far so good. He's Francisco, ‭(333) 452-9843‬. In Ajijic on the carretara, and I've used him a lot with great satisfaction.

Very reasonable. He did two trees, but had only climb one, and it was P$400.

I've since spoken to a Mexican Arborist who is a neighbor of mine and whose advice I've followed previously. She recommends the efficacy of the spray treatment if provided early enough i.e. before there is any sign of problems.

A very good reply. This has been a great discussion. I live in about the same area as you. I have lots of pañms and love them. Are the odds of getting an infection great enough to warrant going to the expense of prophylactic treatment? What do you do?

A disease of citrus trees, now almost worldwide, which causes poor yields, small friuit, dropping of fruit and eventual demise of the tree. We have planted a new lemon tree, here in Tucson, but I fear that it will not thrive, as it has only born a couple of small lemons & dropped them early.

USDA APHIS | Citrus Greening
https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/resources/.../citrus-greening/citrus-greening-hp
Google:
Citrus Greening (Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus) is one of the most serious citrus plant diseases in the world. It is also known as Huanglongbing (HLB) or yellow dragon disease.

Yes, it is worth spraying your healthy trees now. Because they will get the beetles if not and you will be contributing to the epidemic. BTW--it's not an infection; it's an infestation.

...and then, there's the row of beautiful palms that were planted on the Ajijic Malecon some years ago and so far, appear healthy. Hope those caring for them are aware of the threat.

You're surely not suggesting the Ecological Department wouldn't be aware of the danger and have already arranged for spraying?

Oh yea of little faith.

I have not gone through the whole thread, but I've gone through the heartache of losing 2 mature (8 year old) queen palms (or coco plumoso) from the beetle. Both were cut down by Chapala Tree service and the cone from one was analyzed to confirm beetle larve as the 'killer.' The cones were both burned. From what I understand, there's no way to prevent the beetle.

Buena suarte .....
