I'm thinking of doing a road trip there in a few weeks. Morelia, Patzcuaro, etc. I haven't heard about any problems with cartels or vigilantes there for quite a while. Has anyone been through there lately?

My compadre lives in Acuitzio (halfway between Patzcuaro and Morelia). Talked to him New Year's Eve and he said they were having the same gasoline shortages as here.  OTT, all calm.
