Now that Volaris has direct Houston-GDL flights can I fly with my 8 lb dog? If so, can I bring it next to me. She is 17yo and needs a lot of attention.

Unfortunately she can't fly next to you. http://www.volaris.com/en/useful-information/optional-services/package-deals-for-your-flight/pet-on-board/

At least she can be "right There". Make sure the pet has all it's vet documentation. Inbound from NOB (Canada anyway) there is a shot That must be given within 7 days of your departure. Find a vet service that knows and fulfills these int'l vet requirements and you will save y'alls a whole lot of grief. We fly to PV Dec. 19. Our pet has been booked Dec. 16 for that shot and to p/u all the needed documentation. Who needs to be stuck at the airport waiting for a local vet ($$$$) to come in to clear your pet who needs to do it's biz, prob. dehydrated, and already stressed. Just saying.

You're welcome Jreboll. Our dog weighs 30 lb so he has to go with the baggage, which scares us to death. Who has experience with that and how did it go? We'd be coming in from the northeast and the only nonstop is Volaris from NYC.

Pay attention to the ground temperatures at both ends of the trip. It can't be above a certain temperature, and may vary by carrier, or the dog can't fly in cargo. Get an appropriate sized, heavy duty airline approved carrier and secure the door with an airline approved lock so the dog can't escape. Put a disposable diaper or piddle pad on the floor - the GDL airport will throw it away but it will make the dog more comfortable during the trip. Make sure the dog is used to being in the crate. A small attachable water dish is nice but no food. If the dog gets sick in his crate, he will be miserable.

When I bred and showed purebreds, I shipped all over the country and a few times to Europe and never had a problem.

Many airlines coming in/out of Mexico won't allow dogs in cargo from May to September.
