Fish slapping or ...?
It's driving me crazy, people walking around in the water on the south shore, slapping the water with a stick over and over and over!
What the hell are they doing? I mean, they are really intense and serious about this, like it's hard work. They do it for like half an hour or more, one or two at a time. Wade and whack. Wade and whack.
I'm just at a loss about what they are doing. I've never seen anything like it!
Are they trying to catch fish? Please, someone, help me out here.

Why don't you just ask them what they're doing?

They're a ways out in the water, I'd have to really shout to be heard, and even then they are busy slapping and it makes a lot of racket and I don't know that they could hear me.
It just drives my dogs nuts and they bark non-stop during the slap-fests.

Huh. You'd think it would just scare the fish away... that's what my grampa would have said.

It seems to me that if those buckaroos have to go to all that work to try and scare the fish into the nets, and I'm sure that's what they are doing, it must be hard times.

Dang yeah, they are working really hard at it. I just don't recall seeing it until a few months ago.

The water is warming up and the fish are becoming more active.

Right on CB....you win the prize....to be disclosed @ a later date. Seriously, when fish are inactive the native fisherman will do most anything to get the fish moving. On a recent trip to AguaMilpa the native fishermen filled their canoes with rocks, and drifted out throwing rocks toward their nets in an effort to get the fish moving.

OMG Jim, thanks for that info! What makes the fish inactive? Is it certain times of year, or still waters, just plain laziness or what?

Merry, It might be species related, however some are lethargic in cool water, (most are in cold water), however the lethargy changes by species at varying water temps.

Woosie fish like bass and other warm water fish tend to slow down in cold water, whereas true sport fish like trout become more active and prefer colder waters!
