Garufa Empty Garufa

Post by Rosa Venus Wed Sep 05, 2018 11:45 pm

I went to Garufa this afternoon with a co-worker just for some after work drinks and appetizers. A "soft open" on my part. What a nice restaurant. The patio in back is great. Casual elegant spot, attentive professional service, like being in a city. The appetizers were tasty also (Spinach Bocadillos and Atún Fuego). Again, didn't go deep into the menu as I wasn't expecting to go there today and had already eaten big earlier.

I also ran into a couple of people I very much like. One of whom was wearing a bit of BLING! It's an heirloom from the Titanic...

There have been some reviews on TOB of this restaurant: two recent ones are sufficiently devastating to keep me away until and if they get their act together on a consistent basis.  So far, I'll stick to Tango for "Argentinian."

Does anyone remember the "Argentinian" restaurant that briefly occupied the place where Tabarka is now? A group of us tried it and the steaks were almost inedible y tough. The owner assured us that that is how they were supposed to be.

Garufa is in Ajijic on Colon between Zaragosa and Hidalgo, just north of the plaza.

This place makes Tango look like a high school cafeteria.

When we're discussing restaurants, at some point we should cover the subject of the food and service, should we not?  If the high school cafeteria consistently serves up a better meal at a lower price, it reflects poorly on the place with the high end decor.  I'm not too cheap to pay a top price, but the meal and the service needs to justify it.  So far, the reviews on the food haven't tempted me to try it. If you had a meal there, please tell us about it.
BTW, steak isn't my favorite thing, and I haven't been to Tango recently...too crowded now, but I've noticed that they still seem to be very busy with both visitors and locals as customers all week.

It's a Sonora Grill look a like but so far hasn't reached that level of service or quality.

A big gamble putting it in Ajijic as the market here isn't quite what one would think would be the best location but/and Sonora Grill is already well established in GDL.

One review on TOB was from people who went there on a Saturday night, at which time it was very crowded with what appeared to be Tapatios. I think that will be their core customer base.

Wasn't Saturday their "grand opening" day? I certainly wouldn't expect much on any restaurant's first week. From the looks of their kitchen, good chefs will be fighting over the opportunity to work there.

Another poster on TOB went on a weekday and was underwhelmed, to say the least.

Let's hear from people who go in a few weeks from now. That will be more to the point, I think.

I expect more from a high-priced chain. For what they charge and all their previous experience I would expect them to hit the ground running. I know. I know. Foolish of me.

Garufa? Is that a word, or a name? To me, it's an unappetizing name for a restaurant. Pero, ni modo, little chance I'll be eating there being a veg.

CB, what's up with their kitchen? Why will chefs want to work there?

It is one of the nicest I have seen in any restaurant around here. State of the art stainless. They have put some big money into this. Hope they give Tango's a run.

BTW.....they have one in SMA that does very well (so I am told).

The Sonora Grill locations at Andares and P.V. are crowded every night, just not Saturdays.

Buenos Aires, Argentine, Spanish, and you certainly qualify, regardless of your abstinence of meat. lol!

Name reminds of the Mexican restaurant a Guadalajara guy opened in Dublin, Ireland called Mero Mero. Had all the Micks scratching their head wondering, what does that mean.  I translated for them. saying it means "if you're Irish, you're beautiful".

I agree. But I thought I did that when I started this thread. Did I not?:

"What a nice restaurant. The patio in back is great. Casual elegant spot, attentive professional service, like being in a city. The appetizers were tasty also (Spinach Bocadillos and Atún Fuego)."

I admit, my initial experience was limited, but based on my first visit I'll certainly give Garufa a "full meal" try in the near future.

I also look forward to hearing what you think of Garufa after you've been there, gringal.

I haven't been there, but my neighbor was just treated to a birthday dinner there on Friday evening, and I'll pass on his report: He had a filet mignon and said it was just delish and that the portion was so large that he's having a good number of steak sandwiches from the leftovers. His friend had salmon and was very pleased. He also said the service was good and the surroundings beautiful.
So.........there's one report from a satisfied customer.
