There was an article in the news recently about there being an obesity epidemic in the U.S., particularly in the Southern states and that the incidence of diabetes is rising at an alarming rate. The connection between food, style of cooking and level of physical activity is being studied. The results should be interesting...but probably not surprising.

Back in the day, people could eat the biscuits and gravy, sausage drowned in syrup, etc. because they were out every day plowing the back 40 with a mule. Eat that same meal every day now and you're going to look like a buffalo.

Absolutely true. And, there were no indigestible chemicals in any of the food.

So true.

But much of that cholesterol went to coronary arteries even back then which was before the sophisticated cardiology that we have now and the ability to place stents to open blocked and partially blocked arteries preventing heart attacks and the risk of sudden death. Few lived into their 70s, 80s, or 90s back then.

This is happening here in Mexico in the last 10 years. I look at some of the Walmart offerings and shake my head. Not a single canned fruit without heavy syrup. Not a single cereal, except for oatmeal, is without sugar. There is only one yogurt without sugar and that is natural flavour and it clearly states SIN AZUCAR down the side. Education is the key.

At the "everything" store across from the Ajijic Plaza, small magnifying glasses are sold.  I have one in a cloth case in my handbag and find it is necessary for reading the fine print of ingredients on products.  I am amazed at how many products present themselves as healthy and contain things I don't want to ingest, like sugar in its many names. There is one yogurt that says "sin azucar"on the front in bold print, but the ingredients list another name for a sugar or imitation sugar ingredient.  I'll check it out on my next shopping trip and "out" it on here.

Are you referring to 'lactose', which is the sugar naturally present in milk? Yoghurt is made from milk, so lactose would be naturally present. Natural yoghurt, as found in the Middle East, has a tart/sour taste which seems less popular here in the west. As such, many, even most yoghurt products sold here are with added sweeteners. I prefer the natural, but it is very difficult to find, and most stores do not even know what it is.

I will also check the ingredients when I next buy some more (Sunday). If you want it sweeter, it is so easy to add a little NATURAL honey and REAL fruit. My usual breakfast is the plain natural yogurt sin azucar and some real pineapple chunks. You can also add real natural shredded coconut and it also tastes great. Wait 24 hours after adding the coconut if you want it to soften a bit.

No, it was not lactose. It was much more clearly another name for natural or artificial sugar. I'll check it out.

Yes, the real deal no-sugars yogurt is tart and the addition of a little honey and/or fruit makes it a treat.

Most carbohydrates, including oatmeal and other "sugar free" cereals, pastas, unsweetened breads, etc., etc., will boost your blood sugar score.  Even bananas are loaded with sugar but have a lot of other nutrients.
Doesn't most sugar or sweeteners that are not artificial come from sugar cane,  beets, or corn syrup?
Isn't even honey over 90% sugar with a few trace minerals.

All these carbohydrates and sugar equal calories no matter what form they come in and that can lead to obesity and diabetes.
Eat less, weight will be less.  Love of food can be your enemy as much as starvation.

Looking for healthy food at WM means shopping the produce section only! Or the tianguis, El Granero, or one of the many health food stores in Guad.

The word "healthy" on processed food labels means absolutely nothing.

Agree with you, Slainte, eat less, weigh less, or work the excess calories off with exercise.

It's also a wake up message to have a full length mirror near the shower.

Wouldn't work in my case as that would be conflating ugly with obesity.

Too funny!
People don't seem to read links. I'd rather eat a head of broccoli and a head of cauliflower than one Twinkie... which happens to be a smaller portion than the other two. How about let's concentrate on quality (as in digestible) rather than quantity.

Ugly is inevitable, given enough years, while obesity is another matter.

Driving to work on St. Thomas I used to pass the high school and inevitably see kids walking to class drinking a Coke and eating a bag of chips for breakfast. I would say easily 80% of the girls were obese, not just a few lbs overweight. Not quite as bad as the boys who usually were playing sports of some kind.

What do you suppose those girls will feed their kids so the epidemic will continue.

Yogurt is dead simple to make at home with equipment that you almost certainly have on hand. Also, the process is so simple even kitchen clean-up is a breeze. If what you find at the store does not appeal to you try making your own. Shit stirring (pretend that's milk in the bucket!)

LaLa Yogurt Sin Azucar… absolutely NO sugar listed in ingredients and it's tart like yogurt should be.

Watch out for maltodextrin in these “sugar free” foods. It has a high glycemic index score.
I just had a beekeeper over at house this weekend. He tells me a lot of honey is watered down with sucrose and may have only 10-20% real honey so watch where you buy your honey.

I don't know if this is true or not as a test of the "realness" of honey. I was told that ants would not eat "real" but that they would eat "faked" honey. Anyone else hear this?

Maltodextrin is a red flag for celiac as well because it isn't only made with corn but can be made with wheat and they are not mandated to disclose that.

Honey is very difficult to determine the authenticity of, although there are tests, but it's often cut with HFCS too. You can't test it until you buy it. Two places I'm sure of to buy are from Dra. Nina the vet in Joco as she raises bees and from Claudia at Farmacia Xpress in SAT as she knows the person that keeps the bees. Other than that . . .it's a crap shoot and you will probably lose.

This beekeeper said if you place the jar of honey in the freezer real honey starts to form one solid clump in the middle but unpure honey will form streaks as different substances will gel at different temperatures.
